Apex 2016 was the seventh edition of the Apex series, which took place on June 17th-19th, 2016.[1] This was the first Apex event under the new management of the Bifuteki crew, following Alex Strife's removal from the team in 2015.

Although Apex 2015 had previously featured among the largest Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 tournaments in history, Apex 2016 featured a precipitous drop in attendence compared to its predecessor; this can be attributed to controversies surrounding the poorly-run tournaments of previous Apexes, especially the venue closures of Apex 2015. Attendance also suffered due to poor scheduling, as Low Tier City 4, DreamHack Summer 2016, and Snosa II were all scheduled for the same weekend as Apex 2016, and the majority of out-of-region players chose to attend the other events, which were seen as more reliable and well-organized compared to the Apex series. 'Smash 64 fell from 188 entrants to 55, Melee went from having 1,037 entrants to having only 159 entrants, Smash 4 fell from 837 entrants to 309 entrants, and the Brawl event was completely cancelled due to a lack of interest. Nevertheless, several top Japanese players, specifically Nietono, RAIN, and Umeki, travelled to Apex to compete in the Smash 4 event.
