Moving to NIWA

Is this move to NIWA official? I'm just not 100% sure. Shark (talk) 19:15, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

This is more of like the userbase moving and taking their content with them. The old Smash Wiki will still be here, but mostly everyone will be there. So I don't think this would count as being "official". Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 21:14, September 29, 2010 (UTC)

Honestly, IDK. But Megatron1 said that the administrative forces are moving here, so people will be more active here than on the old Smash Wiki. Dang, just looking around makes me feel like I've just moved to a new house. But in this case, unpacking the boxes is basically importing and/or re-uploading content. Actually, I don't really know the purpose of this move. Hopefully, we'll figure it out soon.

Ultrasonicfan (talk) 07:43, 3 October 2010 (EDT)

How are we going to attract new users? Googling "Smashwiki" gets you to the wikia one, not this one. Mr. Anon (talk) 23:36, 4 October 2010 (EDT)

Like I said before, IDK.

Ultrasonicfan (talk) 16:56, 5 October 2010 (EDT)

I agree we need to make the old Smashwiki into a big link that goes to here so we get more users, but there are probably better ideasScoobford (talk) 21:13, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Except wikia will be mad pissed if we do and will remove it. Before you guys even bother to make a post, at least consider what we already did and what we can't do.--MegaTron1XD:p 21:31, 15 October 2010 (EDT)
Some of the stuff I will replace with "actual page over here", like the Smash Arena and all my data. I think we should try to make as big a drain as we think we can get away with. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 22:25, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Melee Head Icons

Where can you find them? I am trying to upload them. Zeldasmash (talk) 19:54, 21 October 2010 (EDT)

Try SmashBoards. Miles (talk) 19:55, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
Smashboards only has SSBM head icons for the five that didn't return for Brawl (as far as I know). I wouldn't know where to find them otherwise. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 19:58, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
No. I already checked, but when i tried to upload them, the entire thing showed up. (They were stuck in a matchup chart, they came along with it). Zeldasmash (talk) 20:02, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
Here are the melee icons. Zeldasmash (talk) 18:18, 24 October 2010 (EDT)

[1]

I apologize the image if it bothers.
Do you know how to separate them from the chart? Zeldasmash (talk) 16:42, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
I probably can, but unless I can get the SSB64 icons from somewhere I won't. We don't need any of the SSBM head icons for right now, so I don't want to put them up unless I can get all of them from all three games. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 16:51, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Those icons are rare, and in the SSB64 matchup chart, only Brawl versions of the icons appeared. Zeldasmash (talk) 17:14, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
I looked the SSB64 icons everywhere and i cant find them. Can you just put the SSBM Head icons? Zeldasmash (talk) 15:12, 10 November 2010 (EST)
Give me a reason as to why the wiki needs them then. I'm not doing something that in the end will only be used by you. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 16:10, 10 November 2010 (EST)
You have been searching for them for quite sometime. It will help the wiki. Its better to use them for the matchup chart and Melee information than those tier list character icons. Zeldasmash (talk) 16:12, 10 November 2010 (EST)
I actually have not been looking for them. The only reason we have the Brawl head icons is because using the character icon images (which are not designed exclusively for tier list use but happen to be most commonly seen there) in the Brawl matchup table results in a compressed blur of pixels. The SSB64 and SSBM matchup tables aren't nearly as large, so they're perfectly fine as they are. In other words, the head icons are a plan B, not a plan A, and so without a situation that forces their use I won't be expending effort to produce them. You are free to learn how to do so yourself. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 16:29, 10 November 2010 (EST)

Welcome page

Hey, you know what Jello did? Yeah. Ok. Basically, me and Jello are from Bulbapedia. Basically, if you were to add the {{subst:welcome}}, then all one has to do is write that instead of {{subst:welcome|the person being adressed|coding of other user}}. Also, the reason it said Jello was because of the coding here: <includeonly>{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}</includeonly>. Thus, whoever was last to edit that template would have their name on it instead. In other words, if you were the last one to edit that page, it'll say Toomai. Whatever the case, Jello's coding is right. I'll even demonstrate by welcoming another user. If it really doesn't work, then fine. ht14 (talk) 18:13, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I didn't know about {{REVISIONUSER}}, thanks for that. The main reason I reverted was because he forgot to put in the includeonly, making it appear that he just stuck his name in. I'll put it in properly. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 18:18, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Yeah, sorry about that, I realized that after I saved the page. :P. I'm a girl, btw. Jellotalk 18:30, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Is there a reason why you reverted my edit? That matchup chart is old and out of date in comparison to the matchup chart seen there. Please message me on my profile if you saw a reason for editing. --KoRoBeNiKi (talk) 22:09, 31 October 2010 (EDT)

It can be re-edited back. sorry for the confusion. But keep the new notes in terms of the matchup chart

Hey Toomai.

Image Maps

Out of curiosity, do you know how to work an image map? I've been experimenting with them, but do not fully understand location values. HavocReaper48 (talk) 17:16, 2 November 2010 (EDT)

The top left corner of the image is position [1,1] (I am presuming it works with human numbers and not computer numbers, in which case it would start at [0,0]). The bottom-right corner is at [how_fat,how_tall]. Is that what you wanted to know? Toomai Glittershine Data Node 17:39, 2 November 2010 (EDT)

Thanks for your effort with the logo proposal, I appreciate it. Shark (talk) 08:24, 3 November 2010 (EDT)

Would you mind doing a user evaluation of me? Don't be afraid to be blunt. No, this isn't another bite at adminship, I've accepted that my best role here is as an editor. Though being able to block people would be nice. Mr. Anon (talk) 20:19, 5 November 2010 (EDT)

I didn't delete it, read the logs more carefully. I moved it to User:Zeldasmash/Character Matchups. You don't need things to start with "Template" to use the {{transclution}} feature. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 13:40, 7 November 2010 (EST)

Yes he does.--MegaTron1XD:p 15:08, 11 November 2010 (EST)

Technically no, but in a way yes. Most things I determine by looking at data, which isn't hacking in the common sense of the word, since I didn't do anything but download the files and related programs from other people that hacked them out. I have done some actual hacking though, which will be part of things like HP determination. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 15:57, 11 November 2010 (EST)

Edit summary

Hi, is there a way to increase the amount of characters you can put in the edit summary? I find that currently the edit summary doesn't allow enough characters (in my most two recent edit summaries, I didn't have enough room to put the edit summary I wanted). Garo108 12:11, 13 November 2010 (EST)

It's not possible. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 12:14, 13 November 2010 (EST)
Aw well, that's a shame, I think that would be useful (for me at least). I don't know if this is just me or not, but it did seem like the edit summaries on Wikia had a slightly larger character limit (though I recall them often being not large enough as well). Garo108 12:19, 13 November 2010 (EST)

Interesting version of "~" you somehow ended up with there. Anyway, you are completely missing the point. Finding the Melee head icons was never the problem. It's the SSB64 ones. And if we can't find those ones, I'm not uploading the Melee ones, end of discussion. Someone else can do it of course (if they know what they're doing), but they won't be used in the matchup table because it would cause inconsistency between the SSB64 and SSBM tables, and we only use the head icons for the SSBB table because there's no other choice. I sent the Central Wikia folks a note regarding the fact that "SmashWikia" still uses "SmashWiki" as its name in several locations, to ensure that they follow through on the name change completely. This is SmashWiki here, and the Wikia version is not, and that must be made clear.

"Regarding the split of SmashWiki from SmashWikia, it seems that many references still exist to the site as SmashWiki, including the large banner present on the site when viewed in the now-default Oasis skin, as well as the "SmashWiki" namespace itself. As per the split agreement, I hereby request that such references be retitled "SmashWikia" so as to clearly distinguish between the two resultant wikis.

And this was the reply:

"Hello Miles,

My eyes are burnin'

They're not really burning, but regarding the colors of the arena, is there already a specific system of colors in place for each character that we're abiding by? In other words, how was red chosen for Mario, #3F7F5F for Bowser, etc.? Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk 19:38, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Yes, there is a system, and it actually has a history that precedes the Smash Arena. About five or seven years ago when I was generating various Smasher-classification systems for fan stuff I was doing, at the forefront was a two-letter code and a two-colour code. Having nothing but MS Paint at the time, I decided to limit myself to a 16-colour palette. This resulted in some pretty glaring combos (magenta and turquoise for Zelda, I think). Once Brawl came out (or, was in the process of coming out) I had to do some rather ugly shoehorning. Finally, I learned computer colours properly, so I was able to strech out more properly and give characters more proper colours, resulting in the system in use today. That said, nothing other than pure red is Mario red, so while I desaturated some colours (Young Link for example), some remain unchanged.
Of course, this system was still limited to Smashers only. So when I took over Smash Arena I had to generate quite a few more. For example, for Giga Bowser I took Bowser's colours and desaturated them a bit.
If you're still curious, I can post both the current colouring system and the ugly ancient one. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Inconceivable 20:05, 29 January 2011 (EST)
All right, thanks for the detailed explanation (you don't have to post the color systems). Is the color system currently being used for anything else on this wiki? ~SuperHamster Talk 20:24, 29 January 2011 (EST)
It's being filtered in slowly as I create the SSBB moveset tables. Personally I'd like to see it used more, like character-based infoboxes, but I haven't really gotten around to suggesting it publicly. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Wacko 20:27, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Sounds like a good idea to me. Would moving away from Mario red be out of the question due to its signature value? ~SuperHamster Talk 20:34, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Honestly, a lot of the colours on those moveset tables are hard to read - using one non-character-specific colour scheme would be easier on the eyes (and if that's out of the question, then they should be made a LOT paler). - Reboot (talk) 20:37, 29 January 2011 (EST)
They can be made a bit paler and keep their colour, yes (note that they're already at 50% pale, though the headings aren't pale at all). Toomai Glittershine ??? Da Bomb 20:58, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Well, let's put it this way - taking one at random, the background of the table on Bowser (SSBB)#Moveset right now goes to #a5a5a5 when greyscaled in Irfanview, and the header goes to #4b4b4b. A table with class=wikitable attached (e.g. the table in Super Smash Bros. (series)#Playable characters), the class recommended for general table use, has a main background of #f9f9f9 and a header background of #f2f2f2. For black text, THOSE are the sort of values which should be aimed at, and even the header is more like 90% pale than 50%. - Reboot (talk) 21:30, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Looking further, the Main Page is actually a good example of how to use coloured backgrounds for the most part - both columns use shades of blue, the headers are sufficiently pale to read, and the background is properly pale, but still recognisably blue. - Reboot (talk) 21:43, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Unless you're implying that our general userbase is achromatic, I'm not sure what you're getting at. Yeah, okay, some of them are a bit dark right now. But colours like #f2f2f2 aren't really even colours. I'll have a look at it soon but 90% fade defeats the point of colours in the first place. Toomai Glittershine ??? Le Grand Fromage 21:46, 29 January 2011 (EST)
I'm just using the greyscales to make things equivalent for comparison purposes (comparing the Bowser green hex values with the wikitable grey hex values wouldn't be so clear). And the Main Page link was to make the point that background blues on the main page rationalise to #fbfbfb & #f9f9f9 and yet are still both recognisably blue and recognisably distinct from one another, while the headers are more like your table-body background colours. - Reboot (talk) 22:01, 29 January 2011 (EST)

To be perfectly honest I can't tell the difference between any background colours on the main page unless I tilt my (laptop) monitor backwards. Besides, look at Bulbapedia, they use tons of strong colours in their tables. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Different 22:20, 29 January 2011 (EST)

I made a warning and it was to the whole wiki. I don't give a damn if the user is inactive, it still doesn't change how awful of a wiki this is. Like I said, don't show your face on real wikia again! --Piratehunter (talk) 20:27, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Are you going to help make the wiki less "awful" or are you just here to troll? Toomai Glittershine ??? Le Grand Fromage 20:30, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Presumably the latter. (Also, "real wikia" is a great oxymoron.) Miles (talk) 20:30, 29 January 2011 (EST)

I'm not here to contribute, no, I'm just here to give you all a warning. Stay away from me on wikia, I don't think I could handle an encounter with one of you slime balls. --Piratehunter (talk) 20:34, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Toom, are you gonna do something about this guy? And what do you mean "Awful wiki"? Zeldasmash (talk) 21:29, 29 January 2011 (EST)
Forget about it. It's not something to get bothered about. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Golden 21:30, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Well, I'll have you know that I am highly respected on most wikis, mostly wikitroid. All I was giving was a warning, stay away from wikia, wikitroid especially. Because if you show up there... I'll have you banned so fast. --Piratehunter (talk) 21:36, 29 January 2011 (EST)

From a site where I'm an admin...? If you don't have anything constructive to do here, I suggest you depart posthaste. Miles (talk) 21:44, 29 January 2011 (EST)

Yeah yeah yeah. Just don't let me catch wind of you again. --Piratehunter (talk) 21:47, 29 January 2011 (EST)

No one here's ever going to go (back) to Wikia, dude. You don't have to worry about that. Anyway I have been given proof you're impersonating someone else and therefore you're blocked. Toomai Glittershine ??? The SMASH-GINEER 21:48, 29 January 2011 (EST)

The Smash Arena

Is getting attacked frequently by IP spammers again. Have any ideas on how to prevent it so we don't have to protect? :/ Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 03:12, 7 February 2011 (EST)

Twice in the past two days is "frequent"? But no, there probably isn't anything more we can do that both blocks spammers and allows actual IPs to vote. Toomai Glittershine ??? Da Bomb 08:45, 7 February 2011 (EST)
What are spammers and what is IP? ..... (talk) 18:42, 7 February 2011 (EST)
Spammers are people who just repeat the same thing over and over again. IP is your identification. It is used to refer to editors without an account.MegaTron1XD:p 18:44, 7 February 2011 (EST)

Umm, i wanna ask about suggestions, about "NOTICE: Suggestions are currently closed due to a three-month-long queue. You may continue to vote on open suggestions but no new ones are allowed until the queue drains to three items ". the bold words are the things I don't understand what does it means (i'm Indonesian, so... yeah)Lucasthe fourthLt4 sign.jpg 06:53, 14 February 2011 (EST)

"three-month-long queue": It will take three months to get to the end of the queue. It's closer to two months now, though.
"the queue drains to three items": there are only three items left in the queue (though I'm thinking two might be better now). Toomai Glittershine ??? The Different 08:29, 14 February 2011 (EST)
Oh, ok! Thanks!Lucasthe fourthLt4 sign.jpg 23:49, 14 February 2011 (EST)
