Hello, my name is John. I knew about Smash back in 2009, but it was only until the spring of 2014 when my friends really got me into it. Credit goes to Snake for getting me to play. If it weren't for his presence in Brawl, I probably wouldn't be writing this page. Back then, I thought Nintendo made dumb games for kids and stuff (don't worry, I've changed my mind!). Naturally, Snake getting cut from SSB4 has disappointed me, but luckily, I've warmed up to the other characters, and have since enjoyed playing games such as Fire Emblem and EarthBound.
I am probably one of only a small amount of people who plays using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck.
My opinions on the Smash games I've played
Melee
I haven't played Melee in years, but I've seen lots of cool tournament videos for it. I believe Melee is the most fun game in the series to watch tournament matches for. If I played it again, I would enjoy it, considering it was the basis for Project M. If anyone would rather play Melee than Project M, I would understand, but I would rather play Project M because it has the same great gameplay and more content.
Brawl
I don't dislike Brawl, especially since it was my first Smash game I was really into, but nowadays, I think it is too slow. That said, I don't think it is fair to compare Brawl to Melee, considering how radically different both games are. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I can respect the chess like nature of competitive Brawl matches, and the skill needed to pull off some of the advanced techniques, but I dislike the game's campy nature and the lack of character balance. If I'm going to play a Smash game nowadays, I would rather play one other than Brawl, although I still occasionally have fun with it.
Project M
Project M is definitely my favorite Smash game to play. I used to dislike it, but thanks to me doing fairly well with Zelda in the mod, I got into it. After a while, I mained Snake, just like I used to in Brawl. When 3.5 came around, I disliked the changes made to Snake, and eventually started maining Ness. I personally think I'm better with PM Ness than any other character in any Smash game. Project M got even better when my friend told me how to replace the music files. I have put in many EarthBound/Mother songs and many Ace Combat songs, among other things. My personal favorite is Agnus Dei from Ace Combat 4, which I put on Final Destination. You should listen to it sometime. I just want to know how to change song names. If anyone knows how to do that, and tells me how, I would be thankful!
Smash 4
It's been a while since Smash 4 was released, and this is what I have to say about the game: While Smash 4 is certainly no Melee in terms of speed or easily strung combos, there are some features that do give it potential for good competitive play.
- The inability to L-cancel severely punishes you for misplaced aerials. Instead of mashing out as many aerials as possible, the focus in Smash 4 is to time them right.
- While I dislike the inability to edge hog, the game deserves credit for making gimping harder than ever before (not that it was particularly easy for me in the first place!). You have to really think about how to prevent enemies from recovering in Smash 4.
While winning in Melee/Project M is satisfying, Smash 4 is still satisfying in its own right, and I enjoy playing it. Some great things about Smash 4 include the large roster, the general character balance, and omega stages (still wish there was "no hazards" mode, but what we have is good).
There are some problems though:
- Fox's and Ness's new voices are terrible. Also, in my opinion, Ness looks a bit creepy. His face lost color and his eyes are kind of blank.
- Some new characters. I don't think Palutena, Dark Pit (yes, I know he was a clone, but still), and Wii Fit Trainer are good additions to the game in terms of valuable Nintendo characters. I also don't think Zero Suit Samus or Toon Link needed to return. Little Mac and Villager probably deserve to be in the game, but their movesets seem to be designed to be cheap. They rely on a campy playstyle that isn't too fun to play against.
- Snake and Wolf were cut...
- The Kid Icarus and new Star Fox Smash Taunts. They are SO annoying lol.
- I love me some Pac-Man, but I am disappointed by his moveset. It should have been based off of the Pac-Man World series.
- I have mixed feelings about custom specials. While they tremendously help Ganondorf, my main, and make other characters viable (why are these things banned?) I can't help but think how many characters could have been made in the development time.
- Smash Tour was a waste of development time. Also, I dislike Wii U Classic Mode. It is really random and boring to me. It seems to me like even fewer trophies are in the Wii U version. It's a shame all of them couldn't be in the Wii U game...
- Where are Big Blue and Fourside? (New Pork City would have been good for 8 Player Smash, in any case)
- The new custom stage builder is great, but they should have kept the ability to just put down some basic blocks as well as the new stuff for times when you don't want to mess around with tracing or making the ledges grabable.
Competency Charts
Taken from Toomai. Thanks for the template! These are mostly based off of how well I do with a character, but characters I dislike playing as will be lower. Characters are ordered by universe.

Character Wishlist
- King K. Rool. Never played a game with him in it, but seriously, imagine all the fun you would have beating your friends with the big fat alligator king! He's cool and has tons of moveset potential.
- Wolf. Can't let you cut that, Sakurai!
- Slippy. This one is mostly a joke. He could either have a unique moveset or just be a Fox clone, but either way, it would be fun to beat him up in training mode.
- Sceptile. A popular character request. My friend and I thought up a whole moveset for this Pokémon.
- Blaziken. Blaziken is famous enough to deserve to be in Smash, it would represent Pokémon Gen 3, and it could be an incredibly easy clone of Captain Falcon.
- Lyn. One of the three main characters of the first Fire Emblem game released internationally. There are already a lot of sword wielders in Smash, but I think she has the potential to have a very unique moveset. I can imagine a Mani Katti Critical Hit as her Final Smash.
- Snake. I understand why he was cut, but the roster seems to be missing something without him. I want him back!
- Knuckles, Shadow, or Eggman. By the time SSBV comes out, it's safe to say Sonic will get another representative. All three of these would make good choices imo.
- File:Autobot Logo.pngOptimus Prime. Yes, the chance of him being in Smash is pretty much impossible (you thought Ridley was too big). But if I'm correct, Transformers is popular in Japan, so you never know. One condition though: He has to have his Generation One design. Generation One is the best Transformers series. I thought of Optimus's whole moveset. Maybe I'll make a subpage for that one day.
Shrek.
