The University of Iowa Smash Championship Series, or UISCS is an upcoming series of tournaments in Iowa City, IA hosted by SLAPAHO. While the name may imply that the tournament is open only to University of Iowa Students, that is not the case. The tournament is open to any Smashers wanting to compete in what will hopefully be the largest tournament series in the state of Iowa. SLAPAHO has set the dates, but their requests are in transit for approval. They plan to host the qualifiers on the 7th and 8th of November, with the Championship on the 15th. An entry fee will be charged, and the proceeds will go the flood relief. Additionally, SLAPAHO is calculating what the prize pool for the tournament will be, and the prizes for 1st place in the qualifying rounds.

This tournament is Smash Back Room certified, as it complies with all the rules and regulations sanctioned by the Smash Back Room.

Tournament Format

The series will consist of three tournaments, although any one person may enter no more than three. The first two tournaments, the "Preliminary Tournaments," are open entry, but each player may only enter one.

Tournament Systems

Qualifier Tournaments

  • The tournaments begin with 3-5 (depending on number of entrants) preliminary rounds
  • These rounds are run under the modified swiss system
    • Rounds are best of 3
    • 2-0 receives 4 points
    • 2-1 receives 3 points
    • 1-2 receives 1 point
    • 0-2 receives 0 points
      • If game three becomes a Caveman Game, each player receives an additional half point
  • After the requisite number of rounds, the tournament breaks to an eight person double elimination tournament
  • The Finals and Semi-Finals are best of 5 rounds.

Championship

  • The Championship begins with three rounds of modified swiss system
    • These are scored just like the preliminary tournaments
  • After these three rounds, the tournament breaks to a double elimination bracket
    • All rounds prior to the Semi-Finals are best of 5
    • The Semi-Finals are best of 7
    • The Final round is best of 9
  • If the final round pairs two members of the same crew, they may choose to split the championship title

Rules

  • No items. Period.
  • All characters are legal, and players may switch characters whenever they want.
  • For the first game of the round, characters are chosen double blind (if requested) and a neutral stage is randomly selected
  • After the first round, the loser of the previous game may select character second and select the stage, excluding banned stages
    • This does include stages that are not banned, but are also not neutral.
  • Dave's Stupid Rule is in effect
    • Additionally, the player choosing the stage must choose a stage. No selecting random in the hopes of getting around Dave's Stupid Rule.
  • Modified swiss games are 3-stock, six minutes
  • Double elimination games are 4-stock, eight minutes

Qualifying

Originally, the idea was that two qualifiers would be held with a 'Last Chance' tournament to fill the remaining slots. This has since been modified to the following: the final will be a Ro16, with 8 proceeding from both qualifiers.

Of the 8 that make it to the quarter final round, six will advance, with the bottom four playing each other for a qualifying spot. So, the semi final players and the two winners of the losing participants will advance.

For the final two slots, the losers of the above matches will play the winners of a re-entry bracket. Entry to the aforementioned bracket is acquired through a buy-in process after elimination from the preliminary rounds. The top two of this bracket, held in conjunction with the remaining preliminaries, will play the losers of the advancing players for qualifying spots.
