*The entirety of the Event Match acts as a reference to the video game Zelda II: Adventure of Link.
*This event match is a reference to the boss battle in zeldawiki where Link battles Dark Link in the zeldawiki, which the Temple stage is based on.
**At the end of the game, Link had to fight against a completely black version of himself called Dark Link. Similar to the Event Match, Dark Link behaved identically to Link, with the same attacks and jumping prowess.
**Link's red costume is a reference to the zeldawiki spell used by Link, which would reduce damage taken from the boss battle against Dark Link, which also turns his green tunic red.
**The title of the match references the title of the game, via changing the order of subjects.
*The description of this event match states that Link has "two" dark sides. The significance behind this state has been claimed that it serves as a reference to Dark Link's debut appearance in the second Zelda game, though it has also been claimed that it serves as a reference to Dark Link's second appearance as a miniboss in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; however, it could merely be a reference to the fact that Dark Link has two stocks and must therefore be defeated twice.
**Link's red palette swap in the match references the shield spell Link would cast before the climatic fight; in the game, it would make his tunic turn red.
**The match takes place in the Temple stage; the background music of the stage is a light, orchestral remix of the Temple theme from Zelda II.
**The description of the Event Match states that Link "has two" dark sides; the significance of this is of debate. Some claim it acts as a reference to the fact that Dark Link's first appearance was in the second Zelda game, though others claim it references that Dark Link made a second appearance in the Zelda series with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Link's Adventure is the 18th event match of the 51 event matches in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The player controls red Link and must win a 2 stock match against a CPU Dark Link on the Temple stage. This event match features no time limit. Dark Link’s artificial intelligence is set at Level 8 and is given a completely black sub-color. He lacks any voice samples, but otherwise, he behaves identically to Link. His character icon is dark, indicating he is an all-black character.

A similar event with the same number appears in Brawl under the name Dark Link Duel; however, rather than using the standard percentage-based damage meter, that battle is fought in stamina mode. Doppelgänger Duel in Smash 4 is also a similar event to Dark Link Duel except that it features Pit and Dark Pit and the player controls Dark Pit instead.

Trivia[edit]

  • This event match is a reference to the boss battle in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link where Link battles Dark Link in the Great Palace, which the Temple stage is based on.
    • Link's red costume is a reference to the Shield spell used by Link, which would reduce damage taken from the boss battle against Dark Link, which also turns his green tunic red.
  • The description of this event match states that Link has "two" dark sides.
