Tom Nook (たぬきち, Tanukichi) is a major character and shopkeeper in the Animal Crossing series.

Origin

Tom Nook is the central shopkeeper in the earlier Animal Crossing games, and is also the one who sells the player their house, and they must work for him to pay off the loan. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf this role is expanded on, and he now runs the real estate agency Nook's Homes, while his nephews Timmy & Tommy run his old store. His business has expanded even further in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where he now owns his own travel agency, Nook Inc., and sells an island getaway package to prospective travelers. He still manages the real estate and infrastructure of this tropical island, and he still sells a house to the player. His real estate business is likely what inspired his role in Villager's Final Smash.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Tom Nook appears as a trophy. As his presence in Melee predates the international release of Animal Crossing, his source game is listed as "Future Release" when the game is not set to Japanese.

This guy's the friendly neighborhood shopkeeper who kindly helps the player set up his or her first house. He has a nose for business, and his customer service is second to none. During the course of the game, his store starts as a corner shop, expands to become a convenience store, and finally becomes a thriving supermarket.

The owner of the town's only store. He not only helps you find a home when you move in but also gives you a job at his shop. His dream is to expand his business, and as the game progresses, Nook's Cranny becomes Nook 'n' Go, then Nookway, and finally Nookington's. He tends to say "hm" and "yes" quite a bit.

Tom Nook briefly appears in the game's first reveal trailer from E3 2013, where he is shown looking down at Villager's dropped Smash invitation as it falls to the ground.

His 3DS trophy references Nook's appearance in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, while his Wii U trophy similarly references Animal Crossing: City Folk, specifically his Nookington's suit. His trophy in for Wii U is part of the The Beginning of Animal Crossing 1 Trophy Box.

Spirits

Tom Nook also appears as two primary spirits. He can be summoned using the cores of Maruhige Shop Owner, Shop Assistant, and one Neutral type. Tom Nook (Nookington's) can be obtained by enhancing the Tom Nook spirit at level 99.

Tom Nook's Spirit Battle uses an Incineroar puppet fighter starting out with a Super Leaf and is fought on the Smashville stage. During the battle, Incineroar receives a sudden Final Smash and his FS Meter charges quickly, referencing Tom Nook's role as a mortgage broker in the Animal Crossing series where he racks up a hefty mortgage debt for the player. Also, the Food items appear, referencing the items the player needs to pay off Tom Nook's debt while Incineroar's melee blows will heal him when they hit, referencing how Tom Nook collects the player's payment for their mortgage debt.
