Forums: Index Proposals Add an ongoing events section to the News template
Proposed.png This discussion is in regards to a proposed change on SmashWiki. The discussion must first meet with a consensus before it is implemented.

I've recently been thinking about potentially adding an ongoing/current events section to the News template in similar vein to Wikipedia's. This section would essentially cover any significant events within the Smash community such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and any notable tournaments. I have created a mockup of what I think it should look like below:

As you might already be able to tell, this would go under the "Latest version" section in the News template. Obviously on the mainpage it'd look a lot smaller though. This section would need to be manually edited every time a new tournament is ongoing or ends. Thoughts? Señor Mexicano (talk) 19:02, July 16, 2020 (EDT)

  1. Tournaments usually only last a few days, yea? Having to constantly change this for small things would be a pain in the ass. There's also the fact that we already report on major tournaments in the news template after the fact. Aidan, the Rurouni 19:19, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
  2. Tournaments rarely last long enough for this to be particularly worthwhile, and the pandemic stuff is obvious enough without further drawing attention to it. Miles (talk) 19:21, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
  3. Tournaments are usually short, I personally don't see a point in reporting them while they're ongoing and then immediately change it probably only a day or so afterwards. Omegα Toαd For my signature. 20:05, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
  4. Yeah, those people really sum up my concerns about this as tourneys normally last around 1 hour to 2 days. I widely oppose this for the reasons the three people said This image is my signature icon. 5. In addition to the previous reasons, because tournaments generally run only on weekends, this section would be empty most of the time. That doesn't seem very useful. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Celeritous 20:59, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
  6. There are people on this wiki who don't really care about tournaments and read the news template for new game content. ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is a never lover boy 15:51, July 17, 2020 (EDT)
Umm, you do realize that the content on the news template is almost always exclusively related to the competitive scene, right? Señor Mexicano (talk) 03:17, July 21, 2020 (EDT)

Neutral

  1. I like the idea since it makes it easier to track which tournaments are ongoing (so that people don't forget to update them), but in my opinion it would be more helpful if it would automatically update whenever the current events category is changed so we don't have to manually update it each time. I thought about something like this initially, but to my knowledge I don't think it's possible to create a list from a category? I might be wrong, but if it is able to be done then this would be the way to do it. Señor Mexicano (talk) 20:01, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
There are ways to do this, but they require extensions we don't currently have. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Celeritous 20:59, July 16, 2020 (EDT)
  2. While it seems like a good idea because of big tournaments but it's a bad idea because of small or normal tournaments because they don't last. So it's not important if this change happens. Actually I think I have a better idea on how to potentially use this. What if it were to instead be used for ongoing global circuits/rankings? The rankings in question being exclusively the ones with an openly viewable list of tournaments. Assuming the COVID outbreak never happened, this would have currently displayed the Spring 2020 PGRU, Smash World Tour 2020, and the Wi-Fi Warrior Rank v5. Should any of the other global rankings start displaying openly viewable lists of tournaments considered for the rankings then we list them on here as well. Additionally, we could also list the other rankings during their reveal period. These usually take about a week or two to complete. I realize that until tournaments return to normal, it would only be showing the WWR, but I can definitely see it's use once this period ends. Thoughts? Señor Mexicano (talk) 03:17, July 21, 2020 (EDT)
