Egg Roll (ごろごろたまご, Rolling Egg) is Yoshi's side special move.

Overview

Yoshi forms a large egg around himself and begins to roll around the stage. The player can steer it by tilting the control stick left or right, and stop the move by pressing the special button again to break the egg. In Melee, it can be used to increase Yoshi's horizontal recovery; while it can be an efficient way to pass edge-guarders, should the opponent intercept Yoshi he is unlikely to have another attempt. If preferred, the player controlling the move may wish to hold the special button. This makes it more difficult to control, but allows more damage.

In Brawl, while the move has potent momentum canceling properties, Yoshi cannot move sideways after using it in the air, making it useless as a recovery move; since Yoshi then becomes helpless after ending the move in the air, it winds up not being useful for such a purpose. The move invoking helplessness also makes it very easy to self-destruct with. The move also has notoriously poor hitbox placement compared to Yoshi's hurtboxes and so is very unsafe to use.

With the ability to move at a fast, constant speed across flat ground, the Egg Roll is useful for quickly moving through certain one-player stages, such as F-Zero Grand Prix, and is also useful in certain Subspace Emissary stages for similar reasons.

Egg Roll no longer leaves Yoshi helpless in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Customization

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the variations:

1. Egg Roll 2. Heavy Egg Roll 3. Light Egg Roll

"Turn into an egg and roll into enemies. You can jump once while in the egg." "Slow, but deals a lot of damage when you roll into opponents." "A bouncing version of Egg Roll. Doesn't last very long."
  1. Egg Roll: Default.
  2. Heavy Egg Roll: The egg rolls much more slowly and takes longer to accelerate. However, it deals more damage (up to 15%), knockback, has a small shield damage bonus, and super armor. The hitbox is also larger, possesses Transcendent priority, and has marginally reduced startup lag, but the ending lag is longer. Unfortunately, because the egg travels very slowly, it's rather easy to counter with grab moves, as fighters can simply shield the attack, and then follow-up with a grab, bypassing the super armor. Because of that notable flaw, this attack's overall usage is rather situational.
  3. Light Egg Roll: Yoshi bounces forwards in an arc upon going inside the egg. Travels quickly but the arc can cause Yoshi to fly over opponents. Deals 11% damage clean, and 10% damage towards the end of the move. The move always ends itself upon landing on the ground, and the move can be ended manually much earlier than the default, albeit with slightly increased ending lag.

Glitches

Screenshot of the glitch.
  • Occasionally, the special effects on the move may be offset vertically by quite a bit, appearing above or below Yoshi.
    • This can be easily reproduced on 75m: if a Yoshi on the large, top girder uses Egg Roll to the right, and drops onto the top-right set of girders, the glitch can be seen.
  • If Yoshi is put into slow-motion state while using any Egg Roll move, the animation will not play and the egg will be stationary.

Origin

A blue Yoshi using the Turbo Tulip in Yoshi's Story.

The move seems to be unique to the Super Smash Bros. series, but may be based on Yoshi's Story where upon eating a Turbo Tulip, Yoshi could encase himself into an egg and fling himself at enemies, out-of-reach objects, or distant locations.

The Egg Roll would later appear in the Mario series as a special move in Mario Power Tennis and Mario Strikers Charged.
