Fox's Arwing in a cutscene from The Subspace Emissary.

The Template:Nihongo is the brand of one-man spaceship used by the eponymous mercenary team in the Star Fox series, and is featured in every Star Fox game. As such it has made appearances in all Smash Bros. games.

Vehicle description

The Arwing is the class of fighter spacecraft that is used in the Star Fox universe. The Arwing is the ship that Fox uses in the Star Fox game; it is a small ship that shoots out lasers. The Arwings that shoot at the Halberd could either be Fox's team members or Fox himself if he isn't participating, but not Wolf O'Donnell or his team, Star Wolf, who uses distinctive yet similar rival attack ships named Wolfens. The Arwings have received redesigns according to each subsequent game each with a more elongated or sleek design. Arwings were outfitted with three laser cannons, one mounted on the underside of the fuselage and two right beside the cockpit. However, the twin laser cannons could only be fired by obtaining laser upgrades during gameplay. Each Arwing was also capable of incredible acrobatic maneuvers such as somersaults, U-Turns, and the infamous Barrel Roll, which was capable of deflecting enemy shots. In additions, each fighter was equipped with a limited supply of powerful explosives called Smart Bombs capable of wiping up numerous enemies with an incredible, spherical blast radius. In Star Fox Adventures, the Arwings fell behind regular tune-ups and thus, the Arwing's flight was limited and the Barrel Roll shield function was removed. In Star Fox Command, several new variations of the original Arwing were created.

In Super Smash Bros.

Arwings make one appearance in this game other than in being briefly seen in the game's opening movie:

As a stage element

Arwings appear in Super Smash Bros. as stage elements/obstacles in the Sector Z stage. They appear occasionally to fly around and shoot their laser beams. Any character that makes contact with the lasers take a decent amount of damage. The Arwings do not always shoot, but sometimes just fly over it instead. Characters can jump on the Arwing while it is flying over the Great Fox. If the Arwing flies off the screen, then that character that was on the Arwing will receive a Star KO. The Arwings do not specifically target anyone when they fire their lasers, instead going by their own patterns.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Arwings return with slightly more representation, in addition to being again sighted in the game's opening FMV:

As a stage element

Arwings appear in the Corneria and Venom stages, serving the same general functionality as they did in the previous game.

As a trophy

The Arwing features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Arwing
The Arwing is the symbol of Star Fox. Like an F-Zero racer, it's equipped with an opposing-gravity device. It can barrel roll and flip with ease thanks to its quick acceleration and flexible control. In battle, the ship uses retractable wings for precise flying. Every Arwing has smart bombs as its sub-weapons. (Star Fox 09/93)

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Arwings make return appearances yet again. They look similar to the Arwings in Star Fox 64/ Lylat Wars

As a stage element

Just like in the last two Smash Bros. games, Arwings appear as stage elements and hazards, in both the game's Star Fox stages: They are new in the Lylat Cruise, but return in the returning Melee stage Corneria.

As a trophy

The Arwing is a randomly collectible trophy:

Arwing

A fighter ship that comprises the main combat unit of Team Star Fox. Boasting antigravity systems known as G-Diffusers, Arwings can perform barrel rolls, quick bursts of speed, and loops. They're also equipped with variable wings that can be switched in and out of combat mode. Their main armaments are their laser cannons, and their secondary weapons are smart bombs.

In the Subspace Emissary

Fox and Falco are both seen piloting Arwings at various points, Fox piloting two and Falco one.

  • Fox's original Arwing was knocked out of the air by the Halberd's Combo Cannon. After it crashed, Rayquaza emerged from the lake and attacked it with Energy Ball, destroying it. Fox ejected to help Diddy Kong fight Rayquaza.
  • Fox's second Arwing was also used to engage the Halberd along with Falco. However, after destroying the Combo Cannon, Sheik leapt from the bridge of the Halberd and punched the cockpit. This forced Fox to eject and abandon his Arwing, which presumably crashed.
  • Falco's Arwing arrived in time to save Fox from Bowser. Ejecting, Falco kicked the Dark Cannon up and shot it to pieces. Later, Falco piloted the same Arwing on an attack on the Halberd. Falco also used his Arwing to help Diddy reach the skiff where DK was being held. He dropped him off and returned to fight the Halberd. After seeing Duon created from Shadowbugs, Falco ejected and skydived to the others' aid. Finally, Falco's Arwing engaged the Subspace Gunship along with Samus', Olimar's and Captain Falcon's ships. It was one of the first into Subspace along with Captain Falcon. What happened to it after that is unknown.
