The Green Missile is similar to Pikachu's Skull Bash, but there's a 12.5% chance of a spontaneous misfire.
—Luigi's trophy description in Melee

The Green Missile (ルイージロケット Luigi Rocket) is Luigi's side special move since Super Smash Bros. Melee. It can be charged for about three seconds, and once let go, Luigi is launched sideways like a rocket, the distance and damage being based on how long the move is charged.

The move also has a 1 out of 8 (12.5%) chance to be a "misfire", that acts like if it was fully charged, but more powerful. It's not always beneficial, however. One possibility is Luigi charging the Green Missile and aiming at an opponent. He fires, but the misfire activates and the opponent dodges. This can very often prove hard to get back onto the stage for recovery. It also leaves the Luigi exposed to edgeguarding. In Melee, the spontaneous misfire fires Luigi extremely far. This has been toned down in Brawl, lowering the chance of a misfire SD.

As Luigi's Super Jump Punch gains no horizontal distance whatsoever, CPU Luigis in Melee are coded to use the Green Missile instead to recover. Unfortunately, they do not switch to the Super Jump Punch once they drop below the level of the stage: the CPU will simply Green Missile back and forth towards the edge they're under, resulting in avoidable SDs. The CPU will also never charge the move, making it even more likely to come up short. High-level CPUs in Brawl are capable of properly combining the two recovery moves (though lower-level ones only used the Super Jump Punch).

Super Smash Bros. Brawl allows Luigi to hold this move at full charge indefinitely, and if a partially charged one hits a wall, occasionally, Luigi will get stuck for a brief moment and have to pull himself free. Also, he makes a spring noise as his body bobs up and down. Something not very well known about Luigi's Green Missile in Brawl is that it gives Luigi a slight vertical boost if used right after a jump. It's unknown why this occurs, but it could have something to do with Luigi's falling speed, which is normally slow. If this trick is used when Luigi is metal or is wearing a Bunny Hood (both of which increase a character's falling speed), that boost will be much higher.

In Melee, an uncharged Missile will travel farther if the control stick is tapped, rather than just held, during the input.

Origin

A Green Missile that is not a misfire.
A standard Green Missile.

It's unknown where this move came from, as it hasn't appeared in any Mario game released before Melee. Luigi has been known to have a comical style, though, as mentioned on the official Smash Bros. website. It also could've come directly from Pikachu's Skull Bash or be loosely based on how Luigi fires out of the pipe cannons from Super Mario World.

Like the Egg Roll, the Green Missile has appeared in games released after the move's introduction in Melee. Luigi uses a move similar to this in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario Sports Mix. Unlike the Egg Roll, however, the resemblance may just be a coincidence, as it is not used as a named special move.

Trivia

  • Green Missile's charging stage gains notable vertical distance when used immediately after a jump in Brawl. Luigi Cyclone shares this property. When these two moves are combined with his recovery move (preferably in the order: jumped Green Missile→jumped Cyclone→Green Missile(s) at apex of height→Super Jump Punch) then it becomes possible for Luigi to travel absurd distances aerially, being able to easily perform many stage jumps, including clearing the entire Online Practice Stage and traversing Temple aboveground.
  • A misfired Green Missile in Melee can cover distances longer than Final Destination.
