Super Mario Sunshine (スーパーマリオサンシャイン, Sūpā Mario Sanshain) is a platform game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo, and was the first game released for the GameCube to star Mario.

Storyline

Mario, Princess Peach, Toadsworth and several other Toads decide to go on vacation to the beautiful Isle Delfino, so named because it is in the shape of a leaping dolphin. When they land, they discover that someone closely resembling Mario, referred to as "Shadow Mario", has vandalised the island with graffiti. This pollution causes the Shine Sprites, which are the main source of power on the island, to disappear, leaving the island covered in perpetual shadow. Mario is falsely accused, and is immediately arrested, tried, and found guilty of vandalism. His punishment is to clean up the island and return the Shine Sprites. The game works on an "area" basis, with Mario having to remove each and every graffito in each of the areas, a pressurised water cannon called F.L.U.D.D. being his primary method of removing the graffiti. At the end of each area he must defeat Shadow Mario, who Mario is chasing because he has kidnapped Princess Peach. When an area has been cleaned up, Shine Sprites will return. Once all of the Shine Sprites have returned, Delfino Plaza floods, allowing Mario to pursue Shadow Mario to Corona Mountain. The impostor later turns out to be Bowser Jr. in disguise, and Corona Mountain is the location of a family reunion arranged by Bowser.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Delfino Plaza, the main "hub world" of Super Mario Sunshine, is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and F.L.U.D.D., which was first featured in this game, replaces Mario's previous Down B, the Mario Tornado. Also, there are many stickers from the game, including one of Bowser Jr. and one of a Shine Sprite. The songs Delfino Plaza and Ricco Harbor (both not remixed) from this game are featured in Brawl on the Delfino Plaza stage.

Trivia

It was rumored (and later proven to be false) that if a player had Super Mario Sunshine data on the same memory card as his or her Super Smash Bros. Melee data, an extra trophy, the Mario and Yoshi trophy, could be unlocked. This rumour may have originated from the fact that having a Pikmin save file on the same memory card as a Melee save file earned the player the Captain Olimar trophy. Even though it has since been proven to be false, so widely spread was this rumour that the official SMS guide by Prima included this and said it was true. One explanation for this is that Prima could have received an advance copy of Melee, so that their review would at the very least coincide with, if not precede, the release of the game. It may have been the case that the trophy in question was indeed planned to be unlocked by this method, and that it had been fully programmed into the game, but that the idea was scrapped shortly before the official release. This would result in Prima's review version being unique so that this "rumour" was in fact true for them, but false for anyone who purchased a copy of one of the officially released versions.
