Revision as of 03:00, November 1, 2010

Also, is there a NIWA IRC or something? Who would I ask questions to? Is anyone tech-savvy willing to help us set up? Emmett 18:24, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

You can ask questions here. Right now the users can help by importing pages. --Porplemontage 19:18, 28 September 2010 (EDT)
Two problems with this:
  1. Only admins can use Special:Import and Special:Export.
  2. I can't import pretty much anything. I think it has to do with file size, possibly maximum upload size (2MB? you may need to increase it), and browser timeouts. Toomai 19:35, 28 September 2010 (EDT)
Normal users can use import here, and I was using export on Wikia. The upload size is 100MB, but I know there's still a problem with keeping the session. I'm looking into that; maybe we can use a bot. --Porplemontage 19:46, 28 September 2010 (EDT)
Alright, large imports work now. The limit is 100MB but also consider the amount of time these things take to upload. --Porplemontage 20:13, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

What about images? Only the description is imported, not the image itself. Toomai 18:41, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

I'm looking into it, but we can focus on pages for now. --Porplemontage 19:18, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

Speaking of images, some of the svgs aren't being rendered correctly, specifically this one, which should have a large black checkmark visible. I'm assuming this is the latest version of MediaWiki, but I still suggest you look into it. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 16:11, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Also, all the svgs lack transparency. We had this problem before and it was because of some sort of rendering error. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 19:09, 29 September 2010 (EDT)
Ok. --Porplemontage 18:14, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Would you happen to be...

The same one and only Porplemontage who created mariowiki.com? If so, then I find it quite hilarious that we'd cross paths once again. MC Hammer Bro. 19:58, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

Oh, you... --Porplemontage 20:13, 28 September 2010 (EDT)

File Imports

To resolve the file imports you guys seem to be having problems with, you may want to install the Multiple Upload extension, it comes in handy. Also I keep being prompted to add numbers after each edit... You should try limiting that to non-autoconfirmed Users Malake256 01:17, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

This is a great extension but unfortunately it's not compatible with the latest version of MediaWiki. I will fix the numbers. --Porplemontage 18:14, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Admin tools

Is it possible that I can get promoted to admin and bcrat as those were my positions on the old smash wiki. Btw, this is SO much better. Clarinet Hawk 10:33, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Can you first confirm that SmashWiki is officially moving through an announcement on the Wikia site? This way, since this is technically SmashWiki's new home, you have a right to your bureaucratic status. --Porplemontage 18:14, 29 September 2010 (EDT)
As of now, there's no clear consensus on that. No one is being forced to move, so even if we announce our depature from wikia, Smash Wikia is still the option for the users reluctant to switch.--MegaTron1XD:p 21:22, 29 September 2010 (EDT)
Alright, so I think the departure should be announced and the wiki remain up for reluctant users. Mostly because this justifies us for copying the pages over. --Porplemontage 22:09, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

iPhone Skin

Can you do me a huge favor and install this extension and then follow this set of instructions for me? I promise I'll be an active user if you do that for me. ^_^ Dr. Pain 99 21:52, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Doesn't look like it will work, sorry. --Porplemontage 22:09, 29 September 2010 (EDT)
That's ok; at least you tried. I'll try to think of something. Thanks. ^_^ Dr. Pain 99 22:14, 29 September 2010 (EDT)

Just a few things

The rest of us at NIWA rarely hear from you and many would have loved to help the move and give this new wiki an edge over the one that will be left. The Steve that designed the skin for WiKirby and Metroid Wiki designed a newer logo here that matches the domain name a little better. We're all looking forward to meeting this Wiki's community and are excited on the move news. Just as courtesy, could you inform us of major events like this? There were some people working on a NIWA SmashBros Wiki, but they are accepting this wiki to take the place they were aiming for. The only real loss was their time and effort, but we'd like to prevent a similar event by informing anyone working on a wiki, as soon as move discussions take place so they can be productive where there won't be any loss of work.Axiomist 00:05, 30 September 2010 (EDT)

Hmm, I would have to say, I prefer the logo we have now, and another user I know was planning on creating an updated version of it. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 00:14, 30 September 2010 (EDT)
Per above.--MegaTron1XD:p 00:21, 30 September 2010 (EDT)
Well, you saw that I posted in the Smash Bros. thread that I was making an offer. My intention was really just to make sure that SmashWiki was happy on Wikia before we put even more effort on building a new wiki from scratch, but there ended up being a lot of support for the move. I'm not happy about the lost work on the other wiki, either. We should have given SmashWiki this final offer before we got to work on our own wiki. Regarding the logo: I think we're keeping the SmashWiki name as long as the move is deemed official by current SmashWiki staff. Maybe they can have the original site renamed SmashWikia or something. --Porplemontage 00:45, 30 September 2010 (EDT)
I've proposed a new logo design that everyone can see and discuss here. Feedback would be great! Shark (talk) 01:58, 30 September 2010 (EDT)

Autoconfirmed Users

I've been on this Wiki for more than four days, but for some reason I'm not part of the "Autoconfirmed Users" usergroup. As such, I cannot move pages, and I'd really like to be able to do that right now. May I please have an explanation/fix? Doctor Pain 99 (CTE) 12:27, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

Autoconfirmed is currently set to a week. --Porplemontage (talk) 12:32, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
K then, i'll just wait a few more days. Doctor Pain 99 (CTE) 12:34, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

Userpages

Is there something on this Wiki preventing non admins from being able to edit other users' userpages? If so, I highly suggest it should be removed. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 05:24, 10 October 2010 (EDT)

Tbh, I highly suggest that it NOT be removed. Most of the time we don't have any business editing other user's userpages, and if there is some violation of policy on a userpage, an admin can deal with it. Doctor Pain 99 (CTE) 10:17, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
Must I remind you that a userpage is just another page on the Wiki? Which means like every other page, can be edited by anyone, and do not belong to anyone. They're not the user's property. Even Wikipedia has a userpage policy that explicitly states "However, pages in user space belong to the wider community. They are not a personal homepage, and do not belong to the user. They are part of Wikipedia, and exist to make collaboration among editors easier." So please, stop thinking a userpage is a user's own magical space that no one else can step foot in. It's just bullshit to have a page on the Wiki that is restricted from editing with no precursor for it. If we didn't have this pointless userpage restriction on right now, Mako Shark and I would have been able to remove all those categories from userpages they didn't belong on much sooner. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 10:51, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
We still have a discussion about this going on, so neither of you should be assuming one way or the other. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 10:58, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
Yes, but there should also be no restriction of editing userpages without a conclusive discussion on it. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 11:01, 10 October 2010 (EDT)

Well, it's removed. Let me know if you want it back. --Porplemontage (talk) 12:14, 10 October 2010 (EDT)

SVGs still broken

You're probably the best guy to ask about this, so why are the SVGs here still not rendering properly? For example, Image:Outdated.svg should look like this, and Image:Warning.svg should be a "!", not a ".". Toomai Glittershine Data Node 18:33, 21 October 2010 (EDT)

If you're able to do something about this issue as well, it'd be much appreciated. Miles (talk) 18:33, 25 October 2010 (EDT)

Those specific images are fixed. Still working on SVG. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:24, 25 October 2010 (EDT)
Out of interest, what did you have to do to fix the images? Is it something that only you can do, or are other bureaucrats and/or admins able to do it? Toomai Glittershine Data Node 23:06, 25 October 2010 (EDT)
It's something only I can do. The problem due to a permission error in some directories from when the images were imported. They only take a second to fix. --Porplemontage (talk) 00:20, 26 October 2010 (EDT)
Another. Miles (talk) 16:09, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

How is the SVG fixing going? It is that you haven't found any help yet, or is it something about the software itself? Toomai Glittershine Data Node 18:25, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

We use rsvg to convert the SVG files and it's really our only option. I don't know why the images are buggy, so I want to update rsvg, but we have the latest version supported by our OS. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:41, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Looks like I'll be replacing all our SVGs with PNGs then. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 18:47, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Oy.

I know you were probably a bit rushed, and I hope I don't sound too critical, but how much of this did you actually read? Neither the posted blurb nor the contact e-mail on NIWA are like the agreed-upon ones. Did someone else do them first or something? Toomai Glittershine Data Node 16:36, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I sent Xizor your blurb and the Gmail email. I don't know who updated the NIWA site with that info, or why. --Porplemontage (talk) 17:18, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
Yeah, sorry for the mishap, guys, but it'll get fixed. Someone else put the current one up just so you guys would have something, but the updated one I received from Porple will be put up ASAP. Sorry about that. --Xizor (talk) 18:49, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
It's done. --Xizor (talk) 03:31, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Forum error

I keep getting a glitch on the NIWA forum registration screen where the image for the captcha doesn't load even if I click "Request another image"; additionally, the letters given by "Listen to the letters" are always the same and inaccurate. I am thus unable to register because there's no way for me to determine the captcha's letters. Miles (talk) 18:26, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I'll forward this along to NIWA. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:41, 29 October 2010 (EDT)
We'll get it fixed ASAP. Sorry about that. --Xizor (talk) 18:51, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

Two other quick forum-y things:

  1. It's always "SmashWiki" and never "Smash Wiki", so you're aware. No space. Could you update that in the places where it appears?
  2. If you wouldn't mind throwing my account into the SmashWiki part of this group, it would be helpful.

Thanks guys! Miles (talk) 21:57, 29 October 2010 (EDT)

I will be sure to make sure it's written as "SmashWiki" when it's written officially. Also, I will take care of the usergroups ASAP. Thanks!
You can always reach me by PM at the forums or by emailing me (coordinator[at]niwanetwork.org). --Xizor (talk) 00:14, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
