The Nightclub, previously known as Hax's Nightclub @ Operating System NYC or HNC/Hax's Nightclub, is the premier Super Smash Bros. Melee weekly/local in New York City, being a replacement for Nebulous since its closure. It has been run since September 2019. It is run on Wednesday nights (7:30 PM) by DarkGenex, Ryobeat and many others. The tournament is sponsored by Andbox, a "family of gamers, artists, makers and breakers" who also sponsor other competitive events/teams (NYXL) at this location as well as at . The venue has helped spark the renaissance of the NYC Melee scene, and the current Melee New York City Power Rankings are based primarily on these results. Along with the usual Tri-State players, the well-ran events have had many out-of-state players come, such as Kalamazhu and aMSa due to the high level of weekly competition. Tournament winners include Rishi, Captain Smuckers, 2Saint, Aklo, and others. Like most other tournaments, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event had mostly ran online attracting competition from around the US but has since switched.They originally ran 64 man events to reduce potential exposure but more recently the tournaments have a 96 man cap. A rare exception was the 128 pre-Apex 2022 event which aMSa won over Aklo having to win 2 sets after having been upset in winners by 2Saint.
Rebranding
Due to controversies surrounding Hax$, the event was renamed to The Nightclub and now it is run by Clèmbulé, Ryobeat, DarkGenex, and others. Their first event was on July 28th, 2021 and they have continued since then. Hax$ was recently unbanned and has since won a nightclub.
Experimental ruleset
The tournament is known for its experimental ruleset compared to other locals around the country. These include:
- Running on lagless widescreen HDMI monitors through an UnclePunch/Achilles (creator of 20XX) mod
- "Frozen" stages (Pokémon Stadium without transformations, Dream Land without wind, and Yoshi's Story without Shy Guys)
- A different stage list due to these changes with Battlefield, Dream Land 64, Fountain of Dreams, Pokémon Stadium, and Yoshi's Story as starters, with Final Destination as a Counterpick
- Anti-Wobbling patch, which forces pummels to let go of characters after a certain amount
- Ledge grab limit of 60
- Removing the bright white cloudy portion of the FD transformation due to blinding visuals
