Smash Summit 8 was a national Super Smash Bros. Melee invitational tournament. It was the eighth installment of the Smash Summit series for Melee, and was held on June 13th-16th, 2019. Unlike previous Smash Summits, it was held at Beyond the Summit's studio facility rather than at the Summit Gaming House, and was closed to the general public.

Players invited/qualifiedEdit

The following 8 players were invited by Beyond The Summit:

Three wild card slots at Get On My Level 2019, Smash 'N' Splash 5, and The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0 were given to the top non-invited finisher of each tournament:

  •   Wizzrobe (who finished 4th at Get On My Level 2019)
  •   Drephen (who finished 9th at Smash 'N' Splash 5 and beat KJH and Shroomed in a round robin tiebreaker, as the highest placed non-invited finisher SFAT, who finished 7th, was unable to attend)
  •   moky (who finished 2nd at The Kid, the Goat, and the Mang0)

Players voted inEdit

The voting system received some minor changes. First, if a person votes for a player who gets eliminated, they will receive half of their votes back, and the votes can be used for other players until the voting ends. Also, the final two players who get eliminated have the choice of either taking a portion of the raised funds that they would have gotten, or be flown out to the tournament, where they can participate in activities and practice.

TriviaEdit

  • This is Axe's first major tournament win with two or more members of the 2018 MPGR top 6 + PPMD in attendance, and this is also the first time a Pikachu main won under the same circumstances.
    • In addition, this is the first Smash Summit that was won by a non-God.
  • This is the first Smash Summit where Mew2King and SFAT did not attend, as Mew2King declined his invitation and SFAT qualified at Smash 'N' Splash 5 but declined due to a wedding.[1]
    • This is also S2J's first Smash Summit where he was invited rather than voted in.
  • This is the Melee Smash Summit with the most international attendance, with six non-U.S. players competing, either through invitation, qualifying, or being voted in.
  • This is the first ever tournament that at least two of the Five Gods attended where none of them placed Top 4 (even including locals); the first tournament with two of the Five Gods was Zero Challenge 3 in 2007, featuring Mew2King and Mango, which was before the latter was dubbed a "god".
    • This is also the first major since Viva La Smashtaclysm to not have any of the Five Gods in Grand Finals (or even Top 3).
  • This is the only Smash Summit to feature either a Captain Falcon or Pikachu in grand finals.
    • This is also the first Smash Summit where a Fox player did not make grand finals.
  • This is the first Smash Summit where every player that was voted in won at least one set while competing.
  • This is the first Smash Summit to not feature either Armada or Hungrybox in grand finals.
  • This tournament is often noted to be where iBDW rose to be a top player. After going 0-3 in pools, he went on a Losers run defeating S2J, Moky, Mango, Amsa, and Hungrybox, 4 of which were top 10 players at the time.
