Tokyo vs. Kyoto refers to test matches that took place between Nintendo's headquaters in Kyoto and the development team in Tokyo to test out the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the Nintendo Network for Super Smash Bros. 4. The distance between these two cities is 283.9 miles (456.9 km), which is nearly the same as the distance between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Videos of two matches were released to the public on Smash Bros. DOJO!!, one on the English site and a different one on the Japanese site.
- Japanese site: Snake, Ike, Kirby and Mario on Delfino Plaza
- English site: Mario, Link, Samus and Sonic on Lylat Cruise
Super Smash Bros. 4
No full matches were released, but the wi-fi battles shown during the Smash Bros. Direct are labeled as Tokyo vs. Kyoto once again. Clips from a few matches were seen with this label:
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U:
- Mario, Diddy Kong and Pit on Pilot Wings
- Lucario, Toon Link, Luigi and Samus on Pyrosphere
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS:
- Pikachu, Samus, Little Mac and Wii Fit Trainer on Arena Ferox
- Fox, Donkey Kong, Mega Man and Mario on Battlefield
Other online battles are seen during the Direct, but not with the Tokyo vs. Kyoto label.
