Shield jump
- Not to be confused with Shield break jump
Shield jump is an aspect of every character's shield in each Smash game. If a character breaks their shield, they will be knocked into the air. For most characters, this is not very noticeable unless they are very light. Jigglypuff's shield jump, however, is uniquely high, going so high that it will always KO itself by going past the upper blast line thus Star KOing itself (unless a wall is in the way).
Jigglypuff's shield jump
Jigglypuff has the most notable shield jump, because unlike other characters, whose shield jump height is negligible, Jigglypuff's height is extremely high, due to a large amount of knockback resulting from the break. Breaking Jigglypuff's shield causes it to incur 300 points of purely vertical knockback, wheras smash attacks at 100% deal about 165 to 195 points; as a result, Jigglypuff will invariably pass the upper blast line. The only way to prevent a KO is to either have a ceiling stop Jigglypuff's shield jump for sufficient time for its trajectory to cease, or for another character to inflict knockback as it is sent flying away; the extreme speed of Jigglypuff's jump, however, makes the former a more likely possibility for stopping the SD.
The reason Jigglypuff's shield jump is so high has never been explained.
Advantages
The first noticeable advantage became clear in Melee's Adventure Mode, when the player has to escape the exploding Brinstar. It is a vertical climb, and the time taken to complete it can be reduced greatly by using the shield jump. However, as this technique requires shield breaking, the Shield Stupidity bonus, worth -2000 points, will be awarded. Brawl's Subspace Emissary allowed Jigglypuff to reach places a few others could, and complete stages, such as Glacial Peak, in record time.
Custom stages in Brawl
Brawl's introduction of custom stages created a new use for shield jumping: a platform high above the main battlefield that provides Jigglypuff with a camping spot that a few other characters can reach or even hit with ranged attacks. Only Pit and R.O.B. can reach a similar height normally, although Meta Knight and Kirby, using their throws, and other characters, using bomb jumps can also threaten Jigglypuff.
The Super Jiggly Jump
The Super Jiggly Jump is a superjump glitch in Super Smash Bros. Brawl involving Jigglypuff on New Pork City.
Using Jigglypuff, stand along the right side of the floating structure closest to the middle and shield until it breaks. If Jigglypuff is close enough to that wall, it will bump it and continue flying without getting KOed. If either mushroom is used during this event, escaping the stun when turning back to normal size is possible, thus enabling the player to move freely during the fall.
It can also be performed while standing under certain blocks in the Mushroomy Kingdom stage.
