Lethal Marathon (めざすゴールはただひとつ, There's Only One Goal to Reach) is the 33rd event match of the 51 event matches in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is a reprise of Stage 8: F-Zero Grand Prix of Adventure Mode, where the goal is to reach the end of the stage in the time limit. Unlike in Adventure Mode, the player has one stock as opposed up to five, the time limit is shorter (45 seconds), the game runs at double speed (causing the timer to run out in only 22.5 seconds of real time), and the player receives no temporary invincibility if the F-Zero racers thunder upon the player. Therefore, after being hit by an F-Zero racer (meaning that touching a single F-Zero racer almost certainly guarantees being thundered down by several more in succession for massive damage around 743%-999% and can one-hit KO the player). The difficulty therefore lies in navigating the stage with Captain Falcon's high falling speed and progressing forwards while avoiding the cars.
It is possible to survive getting hit, if the player is only thundered by the last F-Zero machine, or by DIing out of the F-Zero machines into the ground and teching, though both are almost impossible to perform with the sped-up gameplay. There are also certain points on the field where the player is safe from the cars if he/she ducks, most notably the platforms and bends in the road.
