Potentially contentious information should be discussed on the talk page before being added.
The first set of paid DLC for SSB4, featuring Mewtwo and Mii Fighter costumes.
The second set of paid DLC for SSB4, featuring Lucas, Roy, Ryu and Mii Fighter costumes.

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in the Wii U version, and in an in-game DLC shop in the 3DS version (as the eShop is a "full" app on the 3DS, it cannot be open at the same time as the game, regardless of model).

The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.

Updates

Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Certain updates will also adjust game balance; changelogs for these can be found in the appropriate sections.

Characters

  Mewtwo   (April 15th, 2015)
Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza on October 23rd, 2014. Mewtwo was available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015 as of April 15th, 2015, and is currently available for anyone to purchase as of April 28th, 2015.
  Lucas   (June 14th, 2015)
In addition to Mewtwo, Lucas has been confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character. His official reveal was during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, and was released on June 14th, 2015.
  Roy   (June 14th, 2015)
Melee veteran Roy was leaked as DLC in datamining of the 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 updates. He was officially revealed by Sakurai during a short Nintendo Direct and released shortly after on June 14th, 2015.
  Ryu   (June 14th, 2015)
Newcomer Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series was leaked alongside Roy, and was officially revealed by Sakurai during a short Nintendo Direct and released shortly after on June 14th, 2015. Ryu comes as a set with the stage Suzaku Castle.
  • Future characters
The announcement of the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, which is open until October 3rd, 2015, implies future DLC characters will be implemented beyond those listed above. Masahiro Sakurai has also stated that "several more characters" will be developed, and that they will be fanservice. [1]

It should be noted that in a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character select screen, regardless of whether or not they hail from the same franchise.

Stages

  Miiverse   (June 14th, 2015)
A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 in an update after release. It was made available for free on June 14th, 2015.
    Dream Land (64)   (June 14th, 2015)
  Suzaku Castle   (June 14th, 2015)
Suzaku Castle comes as a set with Ryu.
    Peach's Castle   (July 31st, 2015)
    Hyrule Castle   (July 31st, 2015)

Modes

The Wii U version of SSB4 supported amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.
During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 tournaments but that it would not be ready at launch. Another part of this mode is an elimination style tournament mode that bears close resemblance to that of past Smash games. This type of tourney will only happen at certain times.

Additional costumes for the Mii Fighters are available as paid DLC.
