Being SmashWiki's resident competitive smasher, I figure I'll create a page where people can ask me any questions they may have about competitive play, gameplay, information about characters and stages, what they can improve on, etc. Note though, I'm not equally knowledgeable on all areas, so don't expect an answer as equally informative as someone else may have received. For example, asking a question about Zero Suit Samus will likely result in a less informative answer than a question about King Dedede will.

Additionally, if you have a Melee exclusive question, you're better off asking this guy.

Post your questions in a new section on this page, in the format below.

Subject of Question[edit]

Q: Your question ~~~~

Brawl Ganondorf[edit]

Q:Why isn't he in a bottom tier of his very own? A character with bad matchups against all other characters and as ineffective as Ganondorf should surely be in it's own tier at the bottom in my opinion? I mean, Pikachu was in a top tier of his own and he isn't as much better than the rest of the cast in Smash 64 as Ganondorf is worse than the rest of the Brawl cast. MarioIsTheBest (talk) 13:21, 14 March 2015 (EDT)

A:Simply, Brawl Ganondorf mains outperformed the players of other low and bottom tier characters. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 12:25, 14 November 2015 (EST)

age affecting skill[edit]

Q: would you say that the reason older people are typically better than younger people is just because they have more experience with the game?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.59.247.240 (talkcontribs) 20:04, 3 September 2015 (EDT)

A: Pretty much, older players are on average going to have more play time, and the more you play the better you'll be and better understand the game. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png

Robo Hoo-Hah[edit]

Q: Besides the obvious footstool, are there any other simple ways to lead into it? It seems difficult to do because of how poor ROB's dair is. (If you still know me from YouTube, I am Andyjraliw Bianchi, though I don't comment anymore). Ganonmew (talk) 14:41, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

A: I'm not understanding this question, your title implies you're asking about the Beep Boop, but then you bring an undefined question about Rob's dair. Clarify. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 12:25, 14 November 2015 (EST)

I'm sorry...did I say Beep Boop? Sorry, I meant the Robo Ken Combo. Is there any other ways to guarantee it besides a footstool? Ganonmew, The Thankful Evil Clone 10:14, 16 November 2015 (EST)
Title is "Robo Hoo-hah", e.g. the Beep Boop. And no, without the footstool, Rob's dair is way too slow to true combo into. If you can get a really good on read the opponent's reaction after hitting them with fair, it's possible to get fair to dair. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 11:37, 16 November 2015 (EST)

Major/supermajor SSB4 tourneys[edit]

Q: Do you plan on attending any in the near future (i.e. in the next ~8 months)? And if Sm4sh gets into EVO 2016, are you going to attend that as well? Chilex (talk) 12:59, 14 November 2015 (EST)

A: There's nothing definite I can say, though ideally I will start attending stuff outside my region for Smash 4 next year. My girlfriend wants to attend Apex with me, but I don't know if Apex 2016 is even happening in the timeframe we could go together. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 13:08, 14 November 2015 (EST)

Marth vs. Lucina[edit]

Q: Who do you think is going to be the most successful? I've been using the latter a lot, their neutral game is equally bad and their respective metagames haven't advanced a lot. Drill Blaster Mark 2 (talk) 13:23, 14 November 2015 (EST)

A: I abide by the conventional wisdom that Marth is the superior of the two. Marth's tippers are simply too much of a game-changer, while Lucina as is is really mediocre. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 13:32, 14 November 2015 (EST)

Ah gots two fer ya':[edit]

Q: At a typical Smash tournament, how much prize money is given to the winner, and do you think it's possible to make a living and have a good life JUST by winning tournaments?

Q: What is your general stance on Customizations (not just specials, but equipment as well, as I have yet to hear any competitive player say anything about it) and Mii Fighters? Do you ever use them competitively? And how do think they'll fare in the evolving metagame? For my personal opinions, I'm hoping that Miis will become more commonly played like everyone else, and that all customizations (equipment included, since it's not really broken by any means) will eventually find their place. ...Well, except for the equipment types that provide items! --MeatBall104 MB104Pic2.jpg 21:47, 15 November 2015 (EST)

A: You should have made these separate sections, but anyway. On tournament earnings alone? At this point not really even if you're the absolute best, at least not over a prolonged period. If you can get a good sponsorship, along with popular youtube and twitch channels, and other miscellaneous avenues of revenue, it would be doable.

Equipment will never be viable for serious tournament use. People think customs are bad logistically? Equipment would be an absolute nightmare. Completely ignoring the game-breaking effects many of them have, it's not feasible at all to get standard equipment sets across all WiiUs. I don't play any of the miis, but I know a couple of people who use Mii Brawler in tournament. There's no argument against Mii legality when customs are legal, though I'm not keen with the idea of Mii players being able to fiddle around with their sizes beyond the default. When customs are banned, I don't like the idea of allowing them full access to all their moves when other characters don't get that access, but then also find "1111 Miis only" to be horribly arbitrary, so I really don't know where to stand on Mii legality in customs banned tournaments. If you're wondering about my stance regarding customs, I'm fully pro-customs and do make full use of them. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 04:41, 16 November 2015 (EST)

Do you use customs for Ganondorf? I main a 2122 Ganondorf. John This is for my signature, which I was told needed to be edited. PK SMAAAASH!! 11:49, 16 November 2015 (EST)
Yes, and OT does use that set. Ganonmew, The Thankful Evil Clone 12:03, 16 November 2015 (EST)

Omega Stages[edit]

Q: Are Omega Stages tourney legal? AidanzapunkSig1.pngAidan, the Wandering Space WarriorAidanzapunkSig2.png 20:35, 24 November 2015 (EST)

A: Pretty much all legitimate tournaments treat Omegas as an alternative to Final Destination rather than their own stage; i.e. if Final Destination is struck/banned, so are all Omegas, and if a player counterpicks Final Destination, they can opt to choose an Omega instead. Miiverse is also treated as an alternative to Battlefield like this, as it has the same stage structure with negligible differences. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 12:57, 7 December 2015 (EST)

Personal thoughts[edit]

Q: Without customs, who is in your humble opinion the absolute worst character? --BeepYou (talk) 23:05, 24 November 2015 (EST)

A: I can't really pinpoint any character as the absolute worst. In my view I would say the contenders for least viable characters solo without customs in no particular order are Zelda, King Dedede, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Shulk, Little Mac, and Ganondorf. Little Mac and Ganon (even in default) though are very capable of taking games/sets at the higher echelons of play, especially if they have matchup inexperience on their side (thus it wouldn't be unusual for a big name player to lose to them), they're just so hideously inconsistent and exploitable that a solo Mac/Ganon is going to be really hard-pressed to do decently at tournaments without a significant skill gap on their side against the competition (and even then it's really feasible for a solo Mac/Ganon to lose to a worse player). With customs on, Ganon goes up a tier though he is still definitely a lower tier character, and Dedede and Puff are probably the contenders for absolute worst, as they get no real help from their customs while a lot of Dedede's matchups get a lot worse and he loses a large portion of the few matchups he did well in (Ganon and Palutena for example he probably wins in default, but solidly loses when they have their customs).
