Uppercut (アッパー, Upper) is Simon and Richter's up special move. The user ascends while rising with a sword, hitting multiple times. Its poor height combined with Simon and Richter's limited air mobility makes it difficult to use as a recovery, but their whip aerials are also potent tether recoveries, and unlike a majority of both of their movesets, Uppercut comes out with quick startup in exchange for lacking range, making it a potential option to push away opponents that are aggressive and outside of Simon and Richter’s effective range, as well as a reliable combo ender.

Origin

Richter using his High Jump in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

This move is based on the High Jump ability which was introduced to the Castlevania series in Symphony of the Night. In that game, after Alucard obtains the Gravity Boots, he can perform this maneuver with the inputs ↓, ↑ + [JUMP]. When playing in Richter Mode, Richter can perform this without obtaining the relic, attacking on the way up. It can be performed multiple times in the air. Various characters are capable of utilizing either variation, though it is primarily wielders of the Vampire Killer that use the uppercut.

Trivia

  • This is the only one of Simon and Richter's special moves not to be based on one of the subweapons from the Castlevania series, and is the only one of Simon's special moves that he does not use in his games.
