Hydro Pump[1] (ハイドロポンプ Hydro Pump) is Greninja's up special move. Greninja uses water to propel itself upward, using a manner similar to Pikachu's Quick Attack in that it can change directions while it moves, however unlike Quick Attack, the move can move twice the distance in a single direction and is a little slower, which gives it better maneuverability than Quick Attack does. The move is also used by Pokémon when they are summoned from a Poké Ball.

Customization

An icon for denoting incomplete things.

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the known variations:

  1. Single Pump: Greninja only throws one pump instead of two so it can only go one direction (like Fox's up special). It gains about 30% more distance.
  2. Super Hydro Pump: Greninja throws 2 pumps and it is much more controllable and the momentum never cancels itself meaning more distance(can recover from Final Destination lower blastline), as well as being able to use the same direction twice but it is slightly slower and it doesn't do damage.

Use by other Pokémon

Origin

Hydro Pump is a powerful Water-type move that was introduced in Generation I. It has a base power of 110 (120 in Generations I-V), and was the strongest Water-type move before Generation III. However, it has an accuracy of 80%, and only 5 PP. Greninja is capable of learning this move by leveling up to level 60. It is described as "blasting the foe with a high volume of water" and is usually depicted as a single, large torrent of water launched at the foe - contrary to Greninja's usage in SSB4 which involves riding two thin jets of water.
