Article on Bulbapedia Flamethrower (move)

Flamethrower (かえんほうしゃ, Flame Emission) is Charizard's neutral special move. It is visually similar to Bowser's Fire Breath, though with smaller flames and with longer range. The stream of flames can be directed up or down by tilting the control stick in a particular direction, similarly to Bowser's Fire Breath. The flame dies down the longer the attack is used, but it will never stop. However, the flames will become extremely small if the player keeps holding the special button.

Description from the Brawl Instruction Booklet

Press and hold the B Button to breathe fire. Flames weaken over time.

Description from the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Foldout

Breathe fire. Change the angle with Circle Pad.

Down throw

Charizard also uses Flamethrower in its down throw. Charizard throws it opponent to the ground, and then burns them with Flamethrower. It has mainly horizontal knockback, and it cannot be reflected, even by a Franklin Badge. Prior to patch 1.0.8, it could KO at higher levels of damage, but could be DI'd out of. Following the patch, however, it is now a combo throw, following up into a forward aerial until around 60%, and Charizard's up throw is now its KO throw. This inflicts a total of 6% damage.

Use by other Pokémon

  • Charmander - When Charmander appears in Saffron City, it uses Flamethrower in one direction by breathing fire from its mouth.
  • Charizard (Poké Ball) - Charizard appears from a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, where it uses Flamethrower. Charizard alternates between breathing fire to the left then right.
  • Cyndaquil - Cyndaquil appears from a Poké Ball in Melee, where it uses Flamethrower in one direction, like Charmander. Cyndaquil generates the fire from the flame on its back.

Origins

File:Flamethrower.png
Flamethrower in Generation I Pokémon games.

Flamethrower is a special Fire-type attack introduced in Generation I in the Pokémon games and is used frequently due to its above average power and near-perfect accuracy. In battle, it has a base power of 95 in Generations I-V and a base power of 90 in Generation VI with 100% accuracy, and has a PP amount of 15.

Fire Fang, one of this move's custom variations, is another Fire-type attack in the Pokémon games. Introduced in Generation IV, Fire Fang is a physical attack with 65 base power, 95% accuracy and 15 PP.

Charizard learns both Flamethrower by leveling up in all Pokémon games, and has also learned Fire Fang by leveling up in all games since its introduction.

Customization

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the known variations:

  1. Fire Fang: Has low range, but hits quickly. Releasing the button ends the move with a small explosion.
  2. Fireball Cannon: Shoot fireballs that travel further and only weaken slightly, but also don't deal as much damage.
