The first paid DLC for SSB4, featuring Mewtwo and Mii Fighter costumes.

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in the Wii U version, and in an in-game DLC shop in the 3DS version (as the eShop is a "full" app on the 3DS, it cannot be open at the same time as the game, regardless of model).

The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.

Updates

Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Certain updates will also adjust game balance; changelogs for these can be found in the appropriate sections.

Characters

• Mewtwo (April 15th, 2015)

Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza. Mewtwo was available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015 as of April 15th, 2015, and is currently available for anyone to purchase as of April 28th.

• Lucas (June 14th, 2015)

In addition to Mewtwo, Lucas has been confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character. His official reveal was during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, and is set to release on June 14th, 2015.

• Future characters

The announcement of the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, which is open until October 3rd, 2015, implies future DLC characters will be implemented beyond those listed above.

Stages

• Miiverse (June 14th, 2015)

A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 in an update after release. On June 5th, 2015, Sakurai confirmed on Miiverse that the Miiverse stage, Lucas, and the Splatoon Mii Fighter costumes will be released on June 14th, 2015.

Modes

• amiibo support (February 9th, 2015)

The Wii U version of SSB4 supports amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.

• Tourney mode (Unknown)

During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 Tournaments but that it would not be ready at launch.

• Tournament mode (Unknown)

It was also confirmed in the Extravaganza that a more organized tournament mode with online features in a similar vein to past Smash games is also planned for the future.

Mii Fighter costumes

Additional costumes for the Mii Fighters are available as paid DLC.

• Wave 1 (April 15th, 2015)

The first wave of items was among the first available DLC for SSB4. It features original items, and costumes based on the Mega Man, The Legend of Zelda, and Xenoblade series. For images of the costumes, see here.

Players who pre-order or purchase Splatoon at GameStop between May 8th and June 13th will receive a free download code; the DLC is set for release on June 14th. For images of the costumes, see here.

• K.K. Slider costume (TBD)

In Japan, this costume is set to be available for free as part of a promotion with 7-Eleven from June 19th, 2015 through July 11th, 2015; for the rest of the world, it is listed the same as other unreleased costumes. Whether or not this costume will be released in Japan outside of this promotion is unknown. For images of the costume, see here.
