The tentatively titled Super Smash Bros. is an upcoming fighting game for the Nintendo Switch 2. It was first announced on April 2nd, 2025 at the end of the Nintendo Direct released the same day. It will be the sixth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series (seventh if both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 are counted as two games). The game is scheduled to release in late 2026.

Trailer[edit]

The first teaser trailer was revealed at the end of the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd, 2025. It suggests that Octolings are the first revealed newcomer to the game (although this has not yet been explicitly confirmed).

Other characters appear to be silhouetted or hinted, but they are less clear such as Cloud's Buster Sword, and Donkey Kong's hair.

  • Octoling, with Boy and Girl designs from Splatoon 2, has been confirmed to appear in the game.

Development[edit]

After the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's post-launch development, Masahiro Sakurai, he would be taking a break following the end of development. Sakurai would make his YouTube Channel called Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games while on the break.[1]

The channel is about Sakurai offering his advice and opinions to up-and-coming video game designers on how to make video games more enjoyable and entertaining for the players who play them, as well as dipping into Sakurai's own history with creating games. The channel was mostly recorded in 2022 with the channel ending in 2024. He announced his next project which was unknown at the in October 22nd of 2024 in the last video.[2]

In the meantime, Bandai Namco would make a new division that was specifically about Nintendo games called Studio S that was speculated to be about Smash.

A Super Smash Bros. title for Nintendo Switch 2 was later officially revealed on April 2nd, 2025 via a Nintendo Direct. Shortly after, Sakurai confirmed in a tweet that he had been working on the game.

  • This is the first Super Smash Bros. game since Super Smash Bros. 4 to be announced alongside new hardware.
  • The temporary revealed logo is reused from Ultimate.
  • This is the second Super Smash Bros. game to not feature the involvement of Satoru Iwata, the former president of Nintendo, who passed away in July 2015.
  • This is the third Super Smash Bros. game that had its first trailer released before its console released.
