Lucas is a playable character in The Akaneia Build, a mod for Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was added into the mod in its v0.9 release alongside Sonic on April 7th, 2023.

The Akaneia Build repurposes archived recordings by Lani Minella from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Attributes[edit]

Moveset[edit]

Move Name Damage Description
Neutral attack Kicks with his right leg twice, then does a spinkick with his left.
Forward tilt Launches a small burst of PSI energy in front of himself. Can be angled.
Up tilt Does an aerial flipkick charged with PSI. Can chain into itself at lower damage percentages.
Down tilt Crouches and spins with his leg out.
Dash attack Lunges forward, sending forth a burst of PSI energy.
Forward smash Swings his stick forward. Like Ness's forward smash, it is a reflector, but is faster and deals less damage compared to Ness' bat.
Up smash Releases a burst of PSI that erupts above his head. It has slow start-up but deals immense knockback and leaves horrid lag afterwards, rendering it very easily punished.
Down smash Points at the ground and shoots three bursts of PSI energy.
Neutral aerial Spins in a gyro pattern with PSI energy around him.
Forward aerial Kicks his foot forward, launching a burst PSI in front of himself.
Back aerial Sweeps his legs behind him via a somersault, leaving a trail of PSI energy. Can meteor smash if sweetspotted.
Up aerial Headbutts upwards.
Down aerial Stomps his feet downwards four times, leaving a trail of PSI energy.
Grab aerial Sends his Rope Snake out in front of him.
Grab Pulls out his Rope Snake which extends and grabs the opponent.
Pummel Headbutts the opponent.
Forward throw Uses telekinesis to launch the opponent in front of himself.
Back throw Telekinetically tosses the opponent behind him.
Up throw Telekinetically whirls the opponent around his head, then throws them straight up.
Down throw Telekinetically slams opponent down, then launches them upwards after a brief delay.
Floor attack (front) Gets up and kicks both sides of himself.
Floor attack (back) Gets up and kicks both sides of himself.
Edge attack (fast) Flips onto the stage and does a sweep kick.
Edge attack (slow) Slowly pulls himself up and delivers a powerful punch.
Neutral special PK Freeze Releases a burst of blue, snowflake-shaped PK energy that can freeze opponents.
Side special PK Fire Throws a lightning bolt-like projectile that turns into a burst of fire upon contact. Unlike Ness's version, Lucas always fires at the same trajectory, whether it is launched on the ground or in midair.
Up special PK Thunder Launches creates a stream of lightning that can be directed into Lucas to launch him. Unlike Ness's version, it doesn't fizzle out after hitting a foe, and causes repeated damage.
Down special PSI Magnet Creates a blue energy field in front of himself which allows him to absorb all energy-based projectiles. It can be held in order to use it repeatedly. The orb can damage opponents inside it when the button is released.

Stats[edit]

Taunt[edit]

  • Duster's Rope Snake taps him on the shoulder and has a brief conversation with Lucas, as Lucas shrugs towards it.

Idle poses[edit]

  • Swings his fists in front of his body in a beating motion.
  • Taps the edge of both of his shoes on the ground.

Victory poses[edit]

An orchestrated version of the final four Soundstone Melodies from EarthBound. They also play in the game's credits, Smiles and Tears.
  • With his back towards the screen, crouching, Lucas does something on the ground with a large stick before turning his head around towards the screen, saying "Huh?".
  • Releases a powerful burst of PSI similarly to his up smash and crouches.
  • He bends down on one knee and shoots hexagonal PK shocks from his fingers in the air in front of him.

Congratulations screens[edit]

Trophies[edit]

Like Wolf, Diddy Kong, Charizard, and Sonic, Lucas's trophies are automatically obtained upon downloading v0.9 and onwards.

Classic Mode trophy
Lucas
You may not recognize this sweet young boy from Tazmuli[sic] Village. Lucas is the star of his own adventure, where he discovers his psychic powers. He may not know Ness, but their journeys seem heavily linked. Is this shy boy brave enough to embark on such an outrageous quest, far away from home?
Mother 3 (Japan Only)
Adventure Mode SMASH trophy
Lucas SMASH
Lucas is physically similar to Ness, but his movement feels more like floating. Ness relies on more punches and kicks whereas Lucas draws on his strong psychic powers more often. Master PK Freeze to instantly trap enemies in a chunk of ice. If Lucas needs space, PK Fire will knock opponents away.
B: PK Freeze
Smash B: PK Fire
All-Star Mode SMASH trophy
Lucas SMASH
Lucas's PK Thunder can pass through his opponents without vanishing, which makes it a great choice for recovery. If you are struggling to recover, try calling on help from the trusty Rope Snake. It can latch onto ledges and other fighters. Where did this Rope Snake come from anyway?
Up & B: PK Thunder
Down & B: PSI Magnet

Alternate costumes[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • Lucas is a notable exception to The Akaneia Build mainly including content from before Melee's release, as Mother 3 released on April 20th, 2006, nearly five years after the release of Melee. The development team referenced this in Lucas's announcement, with his notice in the 0.9 trailer calling him "a gift from the future", and noted that they did not plan to include many fighters from games released after Melee—a former developer further mentioned how the team's goal is to stick with characters from before Melee.
    • Of note, however, is the fact that Lucas was originally going to replace Ness in Melee, but ultimately did not due to delays received by EarthBound 64 (the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive version of Mother 3), which was originally slated to release in 1999 before getting cancelled outright. However, Lucas's appearance in The Akaneia Build is pulled from his appearance in Brawl, which is based on his sprite from Mother 3 rather than his model from EarthBound 64.
    • Turbo DX, a mod that used The Akaneia Build as a base, has a different version of Lucas, with a design more similar to his EarthBound 64 design with the model borrowed from Smash 2.
  • In v0.9, breaking Lucas's shield would erroneously play one of Ness's voice clips; this was fixed in v0.91.
  • In v0.9, Lucas's default costume was used for the red team, and his red for the blue team. This was changed in the following update.
