Tails is a playable character in The Akaneia Build, a mod for Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was added into the mod in its v1.0 release alongside King Dedede on June 1st, 2025.

The Akaneia Build repurposes archived recordings by Connor Bringas, who voiced the character in Sonic Adventure 2, the latest Sonic game at the time of Melee's release.

Attributes[edit]

Fittingly, Tails's movement around the battlefield is similar to, but overall falling behind, that of Sonic's. He shares some of his basic moves with Sonic as well, but is otherwise clearly distinct, making him a pseudo-clone. Like Sonic, several of his moves are based directly upon his appearance in Sonic the Fighters and Sonic Adventure, and some of his moves resemble those from Sonic Battle, which released after Melee.

His only special move shared with Sonic is his down special, Spin Charge; it has a shorter charge time to reach its maximum speed, but does not go as fast. His neutral special, Tail Twister, is akin to Mii Swordfighter's Gale Strike, leaving a lingering tornado projectile on the stage that can hit continuously. His side special, Rapid Tails Attack, is based on a move he learns in Sonic Adventure. It is a spinning attack during which he can move horizontally, somewhat akin to a faster version of Spinning Kong; it can also be used in mid-air, though doing so will leave him helpless, limiting its potential as a recovery option. His up special, Propeller Flight, allows him to fly by spinning his tails, which works like in the 2D Sonic games: the button can be pressed to gain height, and his tails deal small damage to enemies above him, but he will tire out after some time.

Moveset[edit]

Move Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 3% Punches twice, and then spins around and attacks with his tails.

Up tilt 9% Swings his tails upwards from below.
Down tilt 8% Performs a crouching kick.
Dash attack 8% (clean), 4% (late) Curls into a ball and rushes forward.
Forward smash 14% Claps in front of himself. Can be slightly angled up or down. Based on his Scissor Punch attack from Sonic the Fighters.
Up smash 1% (hits 1-4), 11% (hit 5) Jumps and curls into a ball, hitting multiple times.
Down smash 12% (sweetspot, front and back), 10% (sourspot, front and back) Swings his tails in front of and then behind himself.
Neutral aerial 11% (clean), 9% (late) Curls into a ball and spins.
Forward aerial 14% (sweetspot), 12% (sourspot) Spins around and attacks with his tails. Resembles his Typhoon attack from Sonic Battle.
Back aerial 7% (first hit), 8% (second hit) Performs two kicks behind him.
Up aerial 10% (clean), 9% (late) Swings his tails in an arc above himself.
Down aerial 3% (first two hits), 10% (final hit) Kicks below him individually with his feet, before stomping with both feet. The final hit acts as a meteor smash.
Grab Tails clinches his hands.
Pummel 3% Knees his opponent.
Forward throw 6% Flies into the air, before tossing the opponent forward. Based on his Airplane Throw in Sonic the Fighters.
Back throw 6% Flies into the air, before turning around and tossing the opponent behind him. Based on his Airplane Throw in Sonic the Fighters.
Up throw 6% Flies into the air, before flipping and tossing the opponent upwards. Based on his Airplane Throw in Sonic the Fighters.
Down throw 6% (hit 1), 3% (throw) Pins the enemy down, then drops onto them in a curled ball. Resembles his Spin Dive attack from Sonic the Fighters.
Floor attack (front) 6% Does a spinball sweep.
Floor attack (back) 6% Does a quick foot sweep.
Edge attack (fast) 8% Gets up onto the stage with a spinball attack.
Edge attack (slow) 6% (per kick) Slowly gets up and kicks twice.
Neutral special Tail Twister 6% (tail), 2% (tornado looping hit) Spins his tails behind him to create a small tornado, which he sends out as a projectile that moves forward slowly and hits a maximum of seven times. When used in the air, the tornado slowly descends at a downwards angle.
Side special Rapid Tails Attack Normal: 4% (first hit), 11% (second hit)
Held: 2% (first hit), 1% (looping hit), 3% (penultimate hit), 11% (final hit)
Spins around on his foot while swinging his tails around. Holding the button increases the amount of time the move lasts, and tilting the control stick while doing so allows the player to move Tails around. Using the move in the air leaves Tails helpless.
Up special Propeller Flight 1% (looping hit) Spins his tails rapidly to gain height. Repeatedly pressing the button decreases the amount of height gained. Once player input ceases, Tails begins panting while falling, and becomes inactionable.
Down special Spin Charge 4-6% Curls up into a ball, before rushing forward at intense speeds. The move can be charged to go further and deal more damage by repeatedly tapping the B button while holding down. Compared to Sonic, Tails moves slower while in this state. Leaves him helpless in midair if it runs out.

For funsies, here's how Sonic's and Tails's movesets line up against each other.

Tails X - - - XX X XX - - - - - XX - - - - - - - XX 2

Overall clone score: 5/25 = 20%

Additional notes: Though the two have similar animations in everything miscellaneous, their physics are different enough to bring the score down to a 2. OT did this for Mario and Luigi as well, who behave similarly.

Jab only gets half a point because the finisher, in addition to having a completely unique animation, sends Tails out farther than Sonic's does. Forward smash gets half a point because of the unique animation, but similar functionality—if quarter points existed, this move would receive one for also pulling from the exact same source material.

Taunt[edit]

  • Spins his tails behind him while posing and shouting "All right!"

Idle poses[edit]

  • Looks to the camera before yawning. Based on his idle animation from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Holds his hand to his face in a contemplative manner.

Victory poses[edit]

A cover of the Level Clear music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, arranged by Sarvéproductions.
  • Performs a backflip, lands and teeters on his right foot, before regaining his balance, looking around, and posing with a grin. Based on his victory animation in Sonic Adventure.
  • Jumps up twice with his fists pumped before posing while shouting, "Yeah! I won!" Based on his victory animation in Sonic the Fighters.
  • Flies off-screen before zooming back in while saying, "Like Sonic, I won't give up!"
    • If Sonic was present in the match, he will instead say "I did it, Sonic!" in the latter two victory poses.

Trophies[edit]

Like King Dedede, Tails's trophies are automatically obtained upon downloading v1.0 and onwards.

Classic Mode trophy
Tails
Sonic's buddy is a savvy technician. Tails helped Sonic thwart Dr. Robotnik in a race for the Chaos Emeralds. If Sonic fell off a cliff or nearly landed in a pit of spikes, Tails flew him to safety. Tails used to be bullied because of his two tails, but since he and Sonic destroyed the Death Egg, Tails has proven that being different is okay!

Adventure Mode SMASH trophy
Tails SMASH
With the power of his two tails, Tails can pick up a tailwind to create a roaring mini-tornado. This Tail Twister isn't strong, but it's great for trapping opponents. His Rapid Tails attack is an elegant crowd-control tactic. With it, he can catch foes in a flurry of tail smacks before launching them away with one last strike!

All-Star Mode SMASH trophy
Tails SMASH
His top speed may be second to Sonic's, but don't count him out! His two tails grant him extra momentum on the ground and let him master the skies, at least until he gets worn out. In awe of his buddy's speed, Tails performs his own Spin Charge with a shorter charge time. His quick maneuverability makes him a tough opponent to pin down.
Up & B: Propeller Flight
Down & B: Spin Charge

Additionally, Tails has a separate trophy, made prior to his addition to The Akaneia Build as a playable character. This is automatically obtained upon downloading v0.9 and onwards.

Tails
Miles Prower is a young fox easily recognized for his two tails, hence his nickname: Tails. He wanted to be just like Sonic when he was younger. They're both freedom fighters, but Tails also developed a knack for mechanics. He pilots the Tornado, a handy biplane, and the Cyclone, a mechanical walker.

Trivia[edit]

  • Tails is currently the only character in The Akaneia Build to not be playable in an official Smash game, though he has appeared since Brawl in several non-playable roles.
    • Coincidentally, this status is shared with fellow Sonic character Knuckles, who is similarly playable in the Brawl mod Project+.
  • Tails' neutral special was inspired by Rashid from Street Fighter, specifically his Ysaar attack (previously his V-Trigger I in Street Fighter V before becoming his Level 2 Super Art in Street Fighter 6), though it coincidentally bears a resemblance to Tails's gained attack from the Extra Emerald Power in Sonic Superstars.
  • Since Tails also appears as a background character on Green Hill Zone, a Tails Chao will replace him in the background when he is being used on that stage.
