Sonic is a playable character in The Akaneia Build, a mod for Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was added into the mod in its v0.9 release alongside Lucas on April 7th, 2023.

The Akaneia Build repurposes archived recordings by Ryan Drummond, who voiced the character from Sonic Adventure to Sega Superstars, to align with Sonic media released around the time of Super Smash Bros. Melee. The recordings are sourced from Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2—mostly the latter, being the latest Sonic game at the time of Melee's release.

Attributes[edit]

True to his name, Sonic is the fastest character in The Akaneia Build. He focuses on his speed to deal damage quickly, though he lacks many proper kill options, as many of his attacks are weak.

Sonic's moveset in The Akaneia Build is mostly unaltered from Brawl, with two exceptions: his down smash is retained from Smash 4, and his side special is changed from the standard Spin Dash to the Light Speed Dash from Sonic Adventure. While it is still a charging move where Sonic curls up into a ball, he performs an uncurled tackle when the move is released. When fully charged, Sonic can store the attack for later use, and the tackle becomes electrified and slightly more powerful. It has relatively short horizontal distance and halts Sonic's momentum at the end, but can be used in mid-air as a horizontal recovery option.

Moveset[edit]

Dash attack 6% (clean), 4% (late) Curls into a ball and rushes forward.

Up smash 2% (hits 1-4), 9% (hit 5) Jumps and curls into a ball, hitting multiple times.
Down smash 14% Performs a split kick.
Neutral aerial 8% (clean), 6% (late) Curls into a ball and spins while undulating. Sonic's Air Spin from Sonic the Fighters.
Forward aerial 2% (hits 1-3), 6% (hit 4) Spins in a horizontal corkscrew.
Back aerial 14% (clean), 10% (late) Performs a backwards roundhouse kick.
Up aerial 3% (first hit), 11% (second hit) Performs an upwards scissor kick.
Down aerial 15% (clean), 9% (late) Stomps below him. The move acts as a meteor smash.
Grab Sonic clinches his hands.

Up throw 3% (hit 1), 3% (throw) Throws the opponent up and sharpens his spikes, which then prick the opponent.
Down throw 1% (hits 1-7), 3% (final hit) Pins the enemy down, then Spin Dashes into them.

Neutral special Homing Attack 8% Curls up into a ball and rises into the air, before firing himself at the closest opponent.
Side special Light Speed Dash 8% (uncharged), 9% (fully charged) Curls up into a ball while tiny orbs of energy gather around him. When fully charged, Sonic will begin to flash, and says, "Ready..."; if the move is inputted again, Sonic will shout "Go!" and dash forward, collecting a line of rings. The move can be launched prematurely, dealing slightly less damage, as well as lacking the electric effect of the fully charged variant. The move can also be shield cancelled prior to being fully charged.
Up special Spring Jump 6% (Sonic), 6% (spring) Launches himself into the air on a red spring from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, damaging anyone in his path. If used on the ground, the spring lingers and can be used by any fighter. The spring acts as a projectile if used in midair.
Down special Spin Charge 4-8% Curls up into a ball, before rushing forward at intense speeds. The move can be charged to go further and deal more damage by repeatedly tapping the B button while holding down. Leaves him helpless in midair if it runs out.

Taunt[edit]

  • Does a front flip, then crosses arms with his index finger pointing out while making a teasing clicking tune, which forms into one of his signature poses.

Idle poses[edit]

  • Turns towards/away from the player, waving his finger in a patronizing manner while grinning.
  • Looks at his wrist while impatiently tapping his foot. References his idle pose from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Victory poses[edit]

A cover of the Level Clear music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, arranged by Sarvéproductions.
  • Spins once and poses while saying, "Too easy! Piece of cake!" His pose references official artwork for Sonic Adventure.
  • Breakdances and then does a pose with his fist while saying, "Hey guy, let's play again!"
  • Runs off the screen, screeches back, and gives a thumbs-up, and says, "I'm Sonic! Sonic the Hedgehog!"
    • If Tails was present in the match, he will instead say "See ya later, Tails!" in the latter two victory poses.

Trophies[edit]

Like Wolf, Diddy Kong, Charizard, and Lucas, Sonic's trophies are automatically obtained upon downloading v0.9 and onwards.

Classic Mode trophy
Sonic the Hedgehog
Without a doubt, this blue hedgehog is the fastest thing alive. Sonic's not a big fan of waiting or injustice, and he will stop at nothing to keep Dr. Robotnik from hurting his friends or pursuing world domination. He's waited a long time to duke it out with Mario and co. Sonic is always up for a friendly rivalry!

Adventure Mode SMASH trophy
Sonic the Hedgehog SMASH
It goes without saying, but Sonic is the fastest character in Super Smash Bros. Melee. No one can outrun him, and they probably can't escape his Homing Attack either. If anyone is nearby, Sonic will lock on and dive in. For a different flavor of speedy attacks, Sonic can charge his Light Speed Dash for a stronger, more powerful hit.

Smash B: Light Dash
All-Star Mode SMASH trophy
Sonic the Hedgehog SMASH
If he wasn't already fast enough, get ready for Sonic's Spin Charge. He can curl up into a ball and traverse the stage while racking up hits. Mash the B button to charge the dash, launching for greater speeds! His Spring Jump gives him a great vertical boost, so there's nowhere Sonic can't go in a battle. This hedgehog never slows down.
Up & B: Spring Jump
Down & B: Spin Charge

Trivia[edit]

  • In v0.9, Sonic's wakeup voice clip was taken from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, performed by Jason Griffith, though, bizarrely, it was his stunned voice clip. Additionally, he made no sound while stunned, despite the clip's usage for that effect in Brawl, nor did he make a sound while sleeping, despite a sleeping voice clip existing in Brawl, and even being reused in Smash 4 and Ultimate where Sonic is otherwise voiced by Roger Craig Smith. In v1.0, Sonic properly snores while sleeping and groans while dizzy, but does not make a sound upon waking up.
  • In v0.9, Sonic's default costume was used for the red team, his yellow for the blue team, and his black for the green team—in terms of costume order, this matches with Mario, suggesting his internal data was used as a base. This was changed in the following update.
  • Prior to v1.0, if Sonic was present in a match, the results screen would be skipped, even if he wasn't the winner. Forcing the results screen to display revealed that his victory and clapping animations were fully functional, ported directly from Brawl (and missing the Chaos Emerald in his spinning victory pose). However, he does not have a displayed name, announcer call, or voice clips, and he uses the Mario victory theme. Starting in 1.0, the victory screen displays properly for Sonic, with updated animations, a unique victory theme and voice clips, his name properly displayed, and "Bonus Character" as his announcer call.
