@Dr. Pain 99: Sorry, no. @Forbidden7: Pretty much answer any questions you have getting started and setting up the wiki. That's assuming you guys were hosting it. --Porplemontage (talk) 22:25, 20 July 2011 (EDT)
Assuming we were hosting it, some of my questions are:
  • Does hosting a site cost money?
  • How do I get MediaWiki?
  • What would being a developer give me exclusive access to?
  • More questions to come...

Blindcolours Killin' it since 1999. 18:53, 16 September 2011 (EDT)

    • Yep, cost depends on how popular the site is. You can start of $5/month with a domain $10/year.
    • mw:Download
    • Shared hosting: FTP files, MySQL databases, a few perks like cron jobs and stats. Dedicated server: Everything on the server. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:57, 16 September 2011 (EDT)

100 entries, sorry. Is there a rule on talk page length here? --Porplemontage (talk) 03:39, 24 July 2011 (EDT)
Yes, when it reaches around 32-40kb, you have to archive your talk.--PSIWolf (TCE) 06:42, 24 July 2011 (EDT)
It isn't a rule; it's a reccomendation... DoctorPain99 {ROLLBACKER} 11:17, 24 July 2011 (EDT)

Where'd it go? I know we had it at some point. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Jiggy 06:52, 4 October 2011 (EDT)

It's never going to stick around permanently because of how easily it can be abused. --Porplemontage (talk) 12:05, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
Wasn't it restricted to bureaucrats though? (Or maybe admins - either way normal members couldn't use it.) So abuse is rather unlikely. Unless you mean it can be easily hacked? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Honcho 17:43, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
Bureaucrats don't need that kind of power on their plates. I've seen admins snap and I've seen accounts compromised. It's not worth it to have that tool lying around. --Porplemontage (talk) 19:28, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
I think that should be our decision, and our admins/bureaucrats here are trustworthy enough to have access to that tool. Any potential abuse of it is not going to be happening, and we need it to help with Wiki maintenance. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 21:11, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
Of course no abuse should happen ever. Abuse only happens when it should not happen. It's a precaution. In addition, the load of finding/replacing in the whole database is too heavy on the server. It's not a standard tool, and I don't have it on any of my wikis to keep things operating as efficiently as possible. I have discretion over extensions to protect the wiki and to make sure we don't have any hogs. --Porplemontage (talk) 21:49, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
"Of course no abuse should happen ever. Abuse only happens when it should not happen. It's a precaution."
It's an unnecessary precaution. Admins/bureaucrats here are promoted with full trust to not abuse the tools granted to them. The current admin base is free of abuse (the only instances I can recall that can qualify as abuse are an unwarranted use of protection on a userpage, and a few permabans in inappropriate instances, which I would consider poor judgment calls rather than abuse). When you look at the history of the Wiki, the worst abuse of the admin tools were just unnecessarily harsh bans (which were tone down in all instances), with no admins ever demoted. Plus, I don't see any rational reason to believe the admins on here would consciously misuse this tool to abuse and vandalise.
Simply put, don't keep the tool away out of unwarranted paranoia.
"In addition, the load of finding/replacing in the whole database is too heavy on the server. It's not a standard tool, and I don't have it on any of my wikis to keep things operating as efficiently as possible."
Being a tool that would be used so infrequently, I don't see how this is an issue. It has only been used once so far months ago to get rid of an unneeded red link spread across the Wiki, where it was immensely helpful. And now we need it again to fix a user's signature that contains a moved image, so we can get rid of a useless redirect without causing a plethora of red links to sprout up. As you can see, this is a tool with demonstrable maintenance use.
For assurance, all uses of the tool will be discussed, to avoid unnecessary uses. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:08, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

Have you thought about advocating that users switch to template-based signatures at Special:MyPage/sig such as on the MarioWiki? Benefits include having to remove broken links in one place and less clutter when editing discussion pages. What is the redirect in question which would be deleted? --Porplemontage (talk) 00:21, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

I'll edit our signature policy to recommend a template based signature, though it can not be forced.
The redirect in question is this, which was moved as the original name was in violation of SW:AIN.
The user being careless, did not listen to the warning to edit his signature to accommodate this change. Being a frequent poster on talk pages when not banned, his signature has been replicated over 100 times now, each with a link to this redirect we should not need, rather than directly to the image itself.
I'll also point out, the one previous use of Special:ReplaceText on this Wiki was not a signature related issue, in case you thought that (it was from an old user that has created hundreds of links to their smasher article on talk pages, a smasher page that has long since been deleted due to lack of notability). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:05, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

Yeah, the sig thing is a side-note for general improvement. There are only a few impressions, which I can take care of. But even if there were more, as pages/files are deleted, it's ok if old talk pages have red links. It's not worth using ReplaceText on the database to make sure that old talk page discussions are up to snuff. --Porplemontage (talk) 01:24, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

The reason to get rid of red links to pages we're never going to need is that they lower the utility of Special:WantedPages. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:38, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

I understand. I think the difference here is how we each weigh the cost (heavy database replace, could be abused but would never happen) vs. the benefit (cleaner list). Your priority is the benefit and my concern is the cost. But I admit, I also like the clean list. Maybe you could give me one link each week or something and I can take care of it. --Porplemontage (talk) 01:56, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

Alright then, change the image link in Brandondorf9999's signatures from [[File:Lemsdadhead (SSBB).png]] to [[File:Lemsdadhead.png]]. With that done, we can delete the former without creating red links. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 02:31, 5 October 2011 (EDT)

Hi.

I heard you're the only person who can do anything about this. Thanks, PenguinofDeath 17:15, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

I'm not going to install that extension since it's not really necessary/beta. BUT you can customize the sidebar using your personal JavaScript. Take a look at this for an easy implementation/starting point. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:11, 17 October 2011 (EDT)

Now wait a tick

I noticed today that we now have two banner ads on every mainspace article for non-logged in users. The Ghostbuster 20:13, 18 October 2011 (EDT)

I noticed that too. Hopefully it doesn't start up pop-up windows. BlindColours o_0 20:15, 18 October 2011 (EDT)
They actually just started working today. What do you guys think? I'm seeing a bunch of video game-related ads come up, which is good. --Porplemontage (talk) 20:41, 18 October 2011 (EDT)
Unless it's absolutely necessary, SmashWiki was and will be better without ads. Also, I'm not seeing as much video game related ads, the only one I see is a generic one with Super Smash Bros. 4 slapped on it. BlindColours o_0 23:21, 18 October 2011 (EDT)
The ads will vary from person to person, but I've seen Sonic, Smash Bros., Ratchet and Clank, Disney Universe, Civilization, Go Vacation, game design, and free-to-play game ads come up. Looks promising for offsetting costs. --Porplemontage (talk) 00:02, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
As undesirable as ads are BC, this hosting is not free. As such, the ads are a necessity, though you can be assured they won't reach Wikia levels. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:23, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

Navigate Away

Hey. I was at school today, making a big edit to List of SSBB Music (Star Fox series). I was making good progress, until one student in my class thought it would be funny to press Ctrl+F4 on my keyboard (he didn't realise the importance of what I was doing, and was sorry afterwards, but that's missing the point), and that button combination closes your internet browser (at least on Internet Explorer, School uses IE6. Yes, crappy old IE6. But again, that's missing the point.) And so, KAPOOF, my edit was gone without me getting to save. This made me realise that something could do to be improved on Article Editing.

If it's possible, it would help if when the browser/tab with SmashWiki on tries to close while you're editing (i.e. by accidentally clicking on the wrong tab to close, Ctrl+F4 pressing students), there could do to be a window pop-up saying "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? Yes/No". With this in place, if you do one of these things by accident, you haven't necessarily lost everything.

I hope you can implement this! ToastUltimatum A transparent image of Swadloon for my sig.Complaints Box 14:14, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

I'm honestly not a fan of those navigate-away boxes, and you have to admit that's a pretty weird case. First step would be researching if there's a decent MediaWiki extension or a MediaWiki setting for it. --Porplemontage (talk) 17:02, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
You could change your browser settings so that it asks you to confirm closing the window if you have more than one tab open. PenguinofDeath 17:20, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
IE6 doesn't have tabs. --Porplemontage (talk) 17:36, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

MediaWiki upgrades

How do you approach upgrades to MediaWiki around here? I heard it was bumped to 1.19 recently and we haven't changed, so I'm wondering how you decide when to do it. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Irrepressible 16:50, 10 March 2012 (EST)

We're on 1.18.1; 1.19 hasn't been released yet. I'll update pretty quickly if it's just a new sub-version. When it's a new branch I'll give it some time as extensions get updated and bugs get worked-out. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:09, 10 March 2012 (EST)
