The Evolution Championship Series 2015, or simply EVO 2015, is an upcoming fighting game tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada, scheduled to take place on July 17th to 19th, 2015 at the Bally's Las Vegas / Paris Las Vegas Casino. Notably, EVO 2015 will include two Smash games, with the return of Super Smash Bros. Melee alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, after continued interest in the game was noted by the staff following EVO 2014.[1]

EVO 2015 allowed custom special moves in SSB4 by utilizing the Official Custom Moveset Project, while several of the game's DLC characters, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu, were not allowed due to how soon before the tournament they became available[2].

On July 1st, 2015, Joey Cuellar, EVO's tournament director, revealed the final registration numbers for this year's tournament, confirming EVO 2015 as the largest Smash tournament to date, with 1,926 entrants for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 1,869 for Super Smash Bros. Melee[3], breaking the previous record for both games set by Apex 2015. Contrary to popular belief that a large number of players would be entering both games, Cuellar confirmed on Twitter that of the 3,280 unique Smash players, only 516 entered both games, amounting for a 16% overlap.[4]

Trivia

  • This is the 14th edition of the EVO tournament series and the 5th to feature a Smash game on the official lineup.
  • This is the first time two Smash games are featured at an EVO tournament.
  • Nintendo of America marketing manager and translator Bill Trinen registered to participate in the SSB4 tournament, under the tag "Th | trintroll",[5] with the "Th" crew tag apparently standing for Treehouse. However, due to the passing of Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, Trinen changed his plans and did not attend, as EVO was on the same day as Iwata's funeral.[6]
  • MadCatz will once again be giving gold FightSticks for EVO winners this year. The top 3 of each official EVO game, including both Smash games, will be recieving one.[7][8][9]
