Why were the three pages split? To be quite hoenst, the split seems rather..unnecessary. After reading through all 3 separate articles, I think we could easily fit all of the information from all 3 pages into a single page without it being too big a page, if that was of concern. All three incarnations of the mode serve, essentially, the same purpose.
*The main focus for each mode is to hold a single-elimination tournament.
*Winner/Loser Out from Melee and Rotation from Brawl (as explained here), again, serve essentially the same purpose.

Winner out and Loser out?[edit]

I thought these were Rotation modes? Ike's Best BuddyMerry! Christmas!!

In Brawl they are. In Melee, they are Tournament settings. Dr. Pain 99 (talk) 00:03, June 13, 2010 (UTC)

Why?[edit]

2 questions.

1. Why is the tournament mode not used in tournaments?

2. If tournament mode is not used in tournaments, why do they exist at all? Avengingbandit HardDifficulty.png 01:05, 2 January 2012 (EST)

1.Anyone, regardless of skill level, can be pitted against someone on the opposite of the skill spectrum. In addition, only one match may occur at a time, leading to an impossible expectation for a finish time, along with the attendance at certain tournaments. Some have well over 400 Smashers participating. Assuming each match took 4 minutes, and it was a strict 1 v 1, the time it takes to complete the first row of a the Tournament Mode is a total of 800 minutes, not taking the time for players to walk up to the single TV.
2.Nintendo views it as useful. My assumption would be that they invisioned the game to be played among friends, putting in a tournament mode that would let a group of friends participate.
There is no need to ask questions that were answered on the IRC by the people who have an idea of the tournament system. MegaTron1XD:p 02:09, 2 January 2012 (EST)
I explained this to you already.
1. Along with what Mega said, there's no option for seeding other than random, single elimination is the only tournament type, players are forced to remain a single character, all matches have to consist of a single game, and it has a maximum limit of 32 players (64 in Melee), when tournaments can well exceed that limit.
In short, the built-in tournament mode is far too limited to create an optimal tournament.
2. Who says the developers created tournament mode for serious tournaments and not as a fun side mode for friends? For a fun little tournament between friends, tournament mode is fine. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 08:35, 2 January 2012 (EST)

Can't figure out how to get player 1 & 2 both in brawl's tournament.[edit]

IT IS TOO CONFUSING AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON IT RANDOMLY SELECTS IF IT IS PLAYER 1 OR PLAYER 2 AND WE CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING ON sorry for the caps, but, also, we are using GameCube controllers. MegaMCAlly (talk) 17:20, 14 July 2013 (EDT)

Do not ask questions about help and tech support on talk pages. And you posted "Sorry for the caps" at the end, why could you not have just retyped the beginning so it didn't have any caps? Awesome Cardinal 2000 17:42, 14 July 2013 (EDT)

8 player smash[edit]

Is it possible to have 8 player smash tournaments on the Wii U version?

Bowser vs Bowser Jr. (talk)

Tournament mode is not yet available in Smash for Wii U (it is apparently set for release in August), which is why this article doesn't have much to say about it. I get the impression that it will only be playable online, and 8-player Smash can't be played online. But I'm not clear on that. Zyrac (talk) 09:48, 8 July 2015 (EDT)

Split[edit]

Support as per above. Amiibae signature image.pngLuke Talk::: 18:46, 31 July 2015 (EDT)
Support as well. However, the Normal Tournament mode should stay on this page, while the player-made tourneys should get their own page. User:Fubaka; 19:23, 31 July 2015 (EDT)
Oppose So like, you want to split this into "Tournament" and "Tourney"? But... there's no meaningful distinction between those terms. Brawl's version of this mode was called "Tourney" despite being the same as Melee's "Tournament", and Smash 4 refers to both its types of tournament as "tourneys". If you were to make a seperate page for the player-made tourneys, you couldn't call it "Tourney Mode". And since I really have no idea what you could call it, I would recommend keeping it on this page. Zyrac (talk) 16:14, 3 August 2015 (EDT)
If that's your only concern, then lets just do the (SSBM/SSBB) and (SSB4) distinction and be done with it. Support - this makes no sense as one page, as per Classic Mode. ScoreCounter 10:58, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
Is there precedent for having "(SSBM/SSBB)" in a page title? Seems odd, but I guess if there's no reason we can't do that, I'd be okay with it. Splitting it that way seems better than having half the Smash 4 content here and half on a seperate article. Zyrac (talk) 13:51, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
Classic was split this way. Miles (talk) 13:52, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
I know that, but ScoreCounter is apparently suggesting that this become a page with two games specified in the brackets. Now that you mention it, though, maybe it would be cleaner to just have seperate Melee and Brawl pages as well while we're at it. Zyrac (talk) 14:00, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
I have to agree. Nyargleblargle (Talk) 14:11, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
Yeah, I think a split similar to Classic Mode is better. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe Nutta. 14:54, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
Support for reasons stated above. As an aside, I think the page names should be "Tournament Mode (SSBM)", "Tourney (SSBB)", and "Tourney (SSB4)" to be consistent with each game. b2jammer (talk) 23:54, 4 August 2015 (EDT)
Any sort of split is okay as far as I see, but can we retroactively call Melee Tourney as well, as with Master Hand's Residence. ScoreCounter 10:33, 5 August 2015 (EDT)
Fair enough, I suppose. I just thought the in-game names would work pretty well, but I'm fine with either. b2jammer (talk) 12:02, 5 August 2015 (EDT)
