Punch-Out!! (パンチアウト!!, Punch-Out!!) for the NES is the first home console installment in the Punch-Out!! franchise of boxing games, and the third game in the series overall, after the arcade Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!. It was released in three successive versions: a contest-only version in Japan named Punch-Out!!; a licensed release named Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! which added real-life boxer Mike Tyson as a bonus opponent; and finally Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, which replaced Tyson with a generic character due to the license having expired.

While the arcade Punch-Out!! games used a wireframe model to show the player character from behind while keeping his opponent visible, the NES was not capable of such graphics. Instead, the developers opted to make the player character small enough to see over. This resulted in a comically short protagonist who had to jump up to hit his opponents' faces; he was thus dubbed Little Mac and characterized as a plucky underdog. In later appearances, Mac's short stature would be less exaggerated, though it remained a defining trait.

Gameplay in Punch-Out!! revolves mainly around dodging and countering opponents' attacks, as if Little Mac attacks aggressively, his strikes will be blocked and he will tire out. Well-timed blows reward the player with stars, which can be used to unleash a powerful Star Punch. The game features a variety of quirky boxers to fight, each with unique attack patterns.

Though it was eventually followed by sequels for the SNES and Wii, the NES installment of Punch-Out!!, and in particular the Mike Tyson edition, remains the most popular and well-known game in the series by a considerable margin.

Little Mac punches Glass Joe in Punch-Out!!.

Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream appears as a masterpiece in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It is unlocked after the player clears the No Mere Sparring Match event on Normal difficulty or higher.

Fighter

Little Mac's first named appearance was in this game. However, Smash seems to somewhat conflate Little Mac with the unnamed, differently designed protagonist of the Punch-Out!! arcade titles, giving him an alternate wireframe design and promotional artwork based on the arcade cabinets. Little Mac's trainer, Doc Louis, also debuted in this game.

Music

The training theme that plays whenever Little Mac is jogging, as well as the main Circuit theme, play on the Boxing Ring stage.

If he's not eating his favorite chocolate bar or making jokes, he's sparring with Little Mac. He'll gladly take a knockout blow from Little Mac if it will help the boxer make it big! Behind every great boxer is a first-class coach, and energetic former heavy-weight champion Doc Louis is Little Mac's. Now and then, he'll put his chocolate bar down, his game face on, and spar with Little Mac, throwing punches just like in his glory days. Glass Joe	Series Related			It's either very brave or very silly for a boxer to have a name so close to "glass jaw." When this French boxer takes a serious hit, he'll see croissants instead of stars. To his credit, Glass Joe never gives up—he's lost more bouts than most have fought in, and yet he never surrenders. Glass Joe might not sound exactly like 'glass jaw', but you've got to admit, it takes guts to go into the ring with a name that tells everyone your weak point. Knock him out and...it'll rain croissants. Weird things aside, there's one thing you can say about Glass Joe: he's a man who doesn't give up, no matter how many times he loses. Punch-Out!! King Hippo	Series Related		If King Hippo was the star of Punch-Out!!, his size would completely hide his opponent from view. As it is, this big boxer can be defeated if you can just get him on the ground; he's unable to get back up under his own power. If you get through his defenses, you'll have him dreaming of his home on Hippo Island. Do you think the spectators sitting behind King Hippo can even see Little Mac at all? This fighter's so heavy, he can't even get up onto his own two feet by himself! Knock him down once, and the fight's in the bag. Great Tiger	Series Related		Great Tiger is a magician and a boxer, hailing from India. He's worked more than a few tricks into his style, floating about and disappearing as he pleases. The audience probably didn't realize they were getting a combination magic/boxing show when they sat down! Try not to let his cloning trick fool you too badly... Great Tiger is an Indian boxer and a skilled magician. He can float in the air, disappear, make copies of himself - it all seems just a little bit unfair. Soda Popinski	Series Related		This Russian boxer just can't get enough fizzy soda. He takes cases with him everywhere, even into the ring! He'll down a bottle before a match and even try for sips during your fight! He's not just thirsty- that soda helps him recover from your blows! It's best to interrupt him, but he probably won't appreciate that. A Russian boxer who loves the delicious taste of soda. He brings whole cases of it to the ringside to drink before each match. And, er...during matches as well. In fact, even after he's been knocked out, he still gropes around for his soda bottle!
