What does Sonic say?
Me and my boyfriend keep arguing if Sonic says "Now, I'll show you!" or "Here, I'll show you!". I'm betting that it's "Here, I'll show you!"... "Now, I'll show you!" doesn't make any sense at all. "Here, I'll show you!" doesn't make much sense either though... We listened to the soundtrack a thousand times and he is still stupid enough to think he is saying "now". Can someone help prove I'm right? Or just give us proof of what he says so we can settle the argument. 75.31.65.208

:He says "Now, I'll show you!". "Here, I'll show you!" wouldn't make sense. "Now, I'll show you!" means that whereas normal Sonic lacks effective finishing moves even at reasonable high damages, now he's Super Sonic he can KO opponents on very low damages. I couldn't really prove it without asking the developers, but I'm fairly certain that he says "Now, I'll show you!". He actually says "Here", not "Now". If you don't believe me, here is a video: @1:49. But I've also taken into consideration (out of good faith) that because PoD and Toomai are in Europe, that maybe they have a different version, in which Sonic says "Now". :::::Mathematician time: Sonic clearly says "Here I'll show you!" in the video which means that on at least one occasion, Sonic has been known to say "Here I'll show you" when activating his Final Smash. Setting aside any possibility of foul play (hacking, re-dubbing, etc.), there are three logical explanations for this:
:::::#On either all or certain copies, Sonic says "Here I'll show you!" instead of "Now I'll show you!";
:::::#On either all or certain copies, Sonic says either "Here I'll show you!" or "Now I'll show you!", selected at random;
:::::#BNK and I are hearing things and he actually says "Now I'll show you!".
:::::Given that I've been hearing "Now I'll show you!" for years, I can't be sure which is correct. All I know is that I heard "Here I'll show you!" in that video... ::::::In that video, on the right side of the screen, there is another video in which you can clearly hear sonic say "now I'll show you." Considering I've never heard him say "here" I'm guessing that video was a hack. 98.111.95.78 03:11, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

::So far, PoD's response is the only one that actually makes sense (the uploader  of that video is incapable of "hacking sounds", 98.111.95.78). While I agree with PoD's options, I also consider that it is mainly a version difference. But if that is true, then why are there some American owners of Brawl who also hear "Now" instead of "Here"? == Survey time ==
Righto, in light of the impasse we're having with this "now" vs. "here" thing, here's a survey for everyone. Just post whether you hear "now" or "here" along with where you live/grew up. The idea is to see if people's accents - which affects their perception of others' accents - is causing this sonoric rift. (This is assuming that they did not change Sonic's line between regions of the game, which is a reasonable assumption.)

i'm going to solve this
Okay
I very nearly trolled a troll here that would have started the rapture.
So I'll refrain and summarize.
Give me the video. I will extract the audio and put it in a spectrogram. I am a linguist with formal training in phonetics. The difference will be night and day on a spectrogram.

voting is not necessary. in this video it is clearly 'here i'll show you'.
*there is no low frequency energy to suggest nasal airflow as would be consistent with 'now'
*the vowel formants are decisively not in positions that suggest back or low vowels, which is also consistent with now
so there's your answer. we'll be having no more debate about this. this trivial matter is henceforce settled. Semicolon (talk) 02:07, March 26, 2010 (UTC)

:Okay, the above video contains the sound played when Sonic transforms into Super Sonic from the Sound Test, so there's no way you can get confused by other sounds, and he says "Now I'll show you!". At one point in the video, the start of the sound is repeated, and it's clearly an "n" sound. If Semi could do his linguistic magic on that to prove it, it'd be much appreciated. I did a second analysis per your request with the better, but still messy, source sound, and I am here to report, once again, that it is unequivocally, without a doubt, "Here I'll show you," with no room for negotiation. Semicolon (talk) 01:40, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
::I would also add I am not, of course, slighting anyone for thinking it was "Now". It's a very curious thing about our perceptual system that these things seem to happen so frequently, that is, confusion about the what phonemes are what. It's called the "problem of invariance" and I find it particularly fascinating that despite in 90% of contexts most speech sounds seem clear as day to us, there are still plenty of places where they aren't. The background noise obviously puts a lot of strain on the perceptual system as well as indexical cues ('sonic' shouting that is way different than a person saying it, is what I mean). Also, I would add, "Now I'll show you" does make much more sense, but alas, as with many things the developers did with brawl, the less sensible thing was opted for. I mean no offense by this, but those who think Sonic says "now" have problems hearing. I suggest that these persons check that out; it could be a build-up of earwax or your brain might recognize "h" sounds as "n" sounds. But really, it's "Here I'll show you!". I mean... like really. This is starting to peck at my nerves. How on Earth can anyone hear "now"? I'm not saying that my perception of sound is better than anyone else's, but it's not hard to get past those "obscuring noises". This is ridiculous. It's as if people are coming out from nowhere thinking that fish are and have always been a species of elephant. However, "Now" does make more sense, but "here" makes sense almost as much. Comma or not. Sonic says "Here I'll show you" in a tense that the one he is speaking to doubts his power... didn't we all learn Language Arts? "Here I'll Show You!" or "Now I'll Show You!"[edit]

I know that the official website says it's "Now I'll show you!", but to me, it sounds like he says "Here I'll show you!" My friend and I are debating about this, and I'm trying to figure out what it is. --Riko 19:53, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

It's "Now I'll show you!" It doesn't make sense if he says "Here's I'll show you" by the way he says it; Sonic emphasizes the first word.--Richard 20:54, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

What does Sonic say?[edit]

Me and my boyfriend keep arguing if Sonic says "Now, I'll show you!" or "Here, I'll show you!". I'm betting that it's "Here, I'll show you!"... "Now, I'll show you!" doesn't make any sense at all. "Here, I'll show you!" doesn't make much sense either though... We listened to the soundtrack a thousand times and he is still stupid enough to think he is saying "now". Can someone help prove I'm right? Or just give us proof of what he says so we can settle the argument. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.31.65.208 (talkcontribs) 02:29, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

He says "Now, I'll show you!". PenguinofDeath 11:18, September 18, 2009 (UTC)

Are you people deaf? He obviously says "Here I'll show you!" Who cares if it makes sense, it's what he says.

I was playing an all-Sonic match in Brawl just a few minutes ago...[edit]

He actually says "Here", not "Now". If you don't believe me, here is a video: [1] @1:49. But I've also taken into consideration (out of good faith) that because PoD and Toomai are in Europe, that maybe they have a different version, in which Sonic says "Now". I don't know, but in the American version of Brawl, Sonic says "here". BNK [E|T|C] 23:47, March 24, 2010 (UTC)

As per the official website (Final Smash section, 2nd screenshot), it's "Now I'll show you!". Same thing on the English (UK) section of the site, and the same caption in the Spanish and Italian sections read "Now see!" and "Now I'll show you!" respectively. None of the other languages use the word "here" (according to Google's translator, anyway). As far as I care, that's proof enough. (I'm Canadian, by the way, but as far as pronunciation goes English is American vs. non-American anyway.) Toomai Glittershine Toomai.png eXemplary Logic 00:05, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
That was a caption, not an official quote. If anything, the site director (Sakurai) was quoting Sonic's Japanese quote translated to English. Did you watch the video? You know he says "here"! If the site says otherwise, then the fact that he says "Here" in the English version should at least be trivial. BNK [E|T|C] 00:13, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
I watched the video and heard "now" as clear as it's been for the past three years, even when attempting to imagine a distortion that would give rise to "here". They're completely different vowel sounds; it's like trying to say "cow" as "near". Toomai Glittershine Toomai.png The Table Designer 00:30, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and a Google search for "Super Sonic "Now I'll show you!"" returns 25,900 results. "Super Sonic "Here I'll show you!"" returns 14,500 results, the top four or five of which are arguments/debates/questions about what the quote is. Toomai Glittershine Toomai.png The Stats Guy 00:34, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
I don't hear, nor can I picture him saying "Now". I'm telling you, it's "Here". His tone even suggests that it's "Here"; in this "tone", if he were to say "now", he would be saying it as if he were taking turns in transforming, since he puts emphasis on "I'll". BNK [E|T|C] 00:37, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
Mathematician time: Sonic clearly says "Here I'll show you!" in the video which means that on at least one occasion, Sonic has been known to say "Here I'll show you" when activating his Final Smash. Setting aside any possibility of foul play (hacking, re-dubbing, etc.), there are three logical explanations for this:
 1. On either all or certain copies, Sonic says "Here I'll show you!" instead of "Now I'll show you!";
 2. On either all or certain copies, Sonic says either "Here I'll show you!" or "Now I'll show you!", selected at random;
 3. BNK and I are hearing things and he actually says "Now I'll show you!".
Given that I've been hearing "Now I'll show you!" for years, I can't be sure which is correct. All I know is that I heard "Here I'll show you!" in that video... PenguinofDeath 02:02, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
In that video, on the right side of the screen, there is another video in which you can clearly hear sonic say "now I'll show you." Considering I've never heard him say "here" I'm guessing that video was a hack. 98.111.95.78 03:11, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

Maybe it happens on occasions. I have never heard him say "Here" it has always been "Now". ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk)☆ 06:49, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

So far, PoD's response is the only one that actually makes sense (the uploader of that video is incapable of "hacking sounds", 98.111.95.78). While I agree with PoD's options, I also consider that it is mainly a version difference. But if that is true, then why are there some American owners of Brawl who also hear "Now" instead of "Here"? This is truly a sticky wicket. BNK [E|T|C] 23:53, March 25, 2010 (UTC)
I always hear "Now". Maybe it's random? Movie138music (talk) 20:58, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Survey time[edit]

Righto, in light of the impasse we're having with this "now" vs. "here" thing, here's a survey for everyone. Just post whether you hear "now" or "here" along with where you live/grew up. The idea is to see if people's accents - which affects their perception of others' accents - is causing this sonoric rift. (This is assuming that they did not change Sonic's line between regions of the game, which is a reasonable assumption.)

Find another video where he says "here". For all we know, it could be a beta version, or a fake. Until further evidence, ignore it. werd BNK [E|T|C] 01:37, March 26, 2010 (UTC)

voting is not necessary. in this video it is clearly 'here i'll show you'.

 • there is no low frequency energy to suggest nasal airflow as would be consistent with 'now'
 • the vowel formants are decisively not in positions that suggest back or low vowels, which is also consistent with now

so there's your answer. we'll be having no more debate about this. this trivial matter is henceforce settled. Semicolon (talk) 02:07, March 26, 2010 (UTC)

Well, I finally managed to start hearing both "here" and "now" in the provided video, although the brain-squinting that was required was intense, and it could just be the subliminal effect of "everyone's saying it's this". Watch this. SalaComMander (talk) 00:48, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Okay, the above video contains the sound played when Sonic transforms into Super Sonic from the Sound Test, so there's no way you can get confused by other sounds, and he says "Now I'll show you!". At one point in the video, the start of the sound is repeated, and it's clearly an "n" sound. If Semi could do his linguistic magic on that to prove it, it'd be much appreciated. PenguinofDeath 00:56, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

I did a second analysis per your request with the better, but still messy, source sound, and I am here to report, once again, that it is unequivocally, without a doubt, "Here I'll show you," with no room for negotiation. Semicolon (talk) 01:40, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

I would also add I am not, of course, slighting anyone for thinking it was "Now". Semicolon (talk) 01:43, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
Special thanks to the eminent dead British scholar and phoneticist Peter Ladefoged for his formant chart. 'Tis the savior of many young linguists. Semicolon (talk) 01:45, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

Are the works of Greek and Latin literary forerunners no longer a matter? I mean... come on! Seriously! BNK [E|T|C] 02:34, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

Sign your posts. This has already been covered. At this point, you're just making things up to make it sound cooler. It doesn't make anything clearer. Check the time stamps before you post Anon. This discussion is months old. DoctorPain99 (Talk • Contribs) DoctorPain99.png 15:54, 22 June 2011 (EDT)
The discussion was never really closed, tbh, and he says here. I'd like to re-open the discussion and settle this once and for all. If someone could provide a link to a video of someone playing a different version of Brawl (a version where Sonic says "Now"), I'd be convinced, and we can add both quotes to the article. For the sake of not beginning an edit war, I will not change anything on the article until it is agree that he says "Here". I have proof, and now I await proof from the opposing side. Blue Ninjakoopa(Talk) 05:28, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
The Dojo states now, despite everyone hearing here. MegaTron1XD:p 10:57, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
When I play,I hear "now". Forbidden7MewtwoHeadSSBM.png 09:07, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
Even in the Video, BNK, he says, "now". The beginning sound is clearly the n sound, the end sound is clearly the "ow" sound, not the long e sound and there is no r sound. DoctorPain99  {ROLLBACKER} 11:40, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
I always heard now as well Goomba's Shoe15 (talk) 12:07, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
I always heard "Now", but Semicolon claimed to be a linguist and stated that it was "Here", so we went with the latter. Regardless of what pronounciation is correct, we have to make a note of the other one.
In Brawl, if you expect to hear "here", than that is what it will sound like. On the other hand, if you expect to hear "now" it will sound like Sonic is saying "Now". The Sound test doesn't help either, it just proves that you can hear it either way. However, the Dojo (the official source on the matter) says that he says "now" though that could just be what Sakurai himself hears. This will NEVER be truly settled, so I suggest we don't just bicker over what we hear. Instead, we should discuss whether we should trust official sources or not. Mr. Anon (talk) 12:34, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
Note that this is NOT a version difference. He says the same thing in all versions, except maybe Japanese. Mr. Anon (talk) 12:36, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
Does it even have to be in the article?--PSIWolf (TCE) 12:55, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
Yes, it does. Mr. Anon (talk) 13:26, 15 July 2011 (EDT)
This is truly a magnificent case of differing perception. Since "Now" is said in the Dojo!! (in quotation marks, at least), it can stay (I won't make any change), but Sonic saying "Here" should definitely be mentioned. I honestly don't know how anyone could hear "Now", but that's probably because I've perceived "Here" for so long, just as you all have heard "Now". Blue Ninjakoopa(Talk) 16:19, 15 July 2011 (EDT)

This is probably not the ideal time and place to put this, but...[edit]

I've been looking through Brawl's data and actually managed to find the sound clip where he says whatever the fuck he says in his Final Smash. And guess what? There is no echo! Should I upload it to the site, and then you all can decide whether he says "now" or "here"? --EndGenuity (talk) 19:02, 21 May 2014 (EDT)

Go ahead. Although the discussion ended, the debate isn't really settled. Therefore this information would be useful in clearing things up since Sonic says "here" while the caption on his Final Smash from the DOJO!! says "now." blue ninjakoopa 20:03, 21 May 2014 (EDT)

Here or Now...Both?[edit]

I definitely hear "Here" in this video, but "Now" in this one. Is it possible that the line actually varies based on the version of the game? SalaComMander (talk) 22:40, 21 September 2014 (EDT)

That's what it seems like. I know the first link is to a video of the NTSC version since that's also what I hear and I bought the North American version, but the second video has to be of the PAL version, since the only other version is Japanese (and that one uses a Japanese voice actor for Sonic). Blue Ninjakoopa 23:35, 21 September 2014 (EDT)
Or they didn't record two versions of the same line with one word only being changed, and that the echo in-game is playing tricks to some people's minds. In the direct audio with no echo, a distinctive "n" can be heard. But this is and old and tired discussion. Unknown the Hedgehog 00:10, 22 September 2014 (EDT)
There is no echo in either video, and I still hear two different phrases.
SalaComMander (talk) 17:30, 23 September 2014 (EDT)
(Edit conflict) I would also like to note that Jason Griffith apparently voices Sonic in both the North American and PAL releases of the game; note the presence of a Japanese voice actor (Junichi Kanemaru). As it is rare for the same voice actor to create clips for two different regions, it can be safely concluded that the voice samples are the same, and that Sonic says "Now I'll show you!" in both North America and Europe.

So, listening to the second video once more, I think it actually is "now I'll show you," it's just Sonic's grunt right before saying it combined with the echo makes it sound like "here." Damn. Sorry for pressing this shit for so long. So is this still to be classified as "controversial"? It can simply be mentioned in the article's trivia section that the aforementioned interruptions make it seem like Sonic says "Here", and that the raw voice clip (which doesn't include the echo, which I think had to have been ripped from the game directly instead of from the sound test) in SalaCommander's second link is hard proof that "now" is actually what he says. Blue Ninjakoopa 19:26, 22 September 2014 (EDT)
Nvm, it got taken care of. Blue Ninjakoopa 00:20, 23 September 2014 (EDT)

Uh...[edit]

"Also, instead of saying "Now I'll show you!", he now says "Super Sonic style!" upon activating the Final Smash. Instead in the Japanese version, he says "キメてやる!" (I'll show you!) for the former game, while in Smash 4 he says "決めってある!" (It's been decided!)."

How can this be the case if Sonic reuses his Japanese clips from Brawl? I think they're the same clip, just being mistaken for different things. AidanzapunkSig1.pngAidan, the Wandering Dragon WarriorAidanzapunkSig2.png 13:38, 3 September 2016 (EDT)

Bumping this, because I still haven't gotten an answer. AidanzapunkSig1.pngAidan, the Thankful Dragon WarriorAidanzapunkSig2.png 08:20, 23 November 2016 (EST)

Actually, Sonic says "決めってある!" (It's been decided!).", and if you don't believe me, here's a link with all his Japanese voice clips from SSB4, which (as you know) are recycled from Brawl. So, that means "決めってある!" (It's been decided!)." was what he said in Brawl and in SSB4, and not "キメてやる!" (I'll show you!). Hylia's Eye (talk) 00:32, 10 December 2016 (EST)
