Vidjo-dropping and Vidjo-canceling[edit]

It had been known for years that Peach could drop a turnip while floating, maintain her float, throw a turnip as soon as a floated aerial ended, and stop floating but it was not until late 2005 that American Peach Vidjogamer discovered how this was done. For this, Australian Peach Quetzalcoatl named it the Vidjo-cancel and relayed the information to, among others, Swedish Peach Yuna, who coined the term "Vidjo-drop" and explored the use of both.

In order to understand the Vidjo-drop and the Vidjo-cancel, one must have an understanding of interruptibility. While floating, perform an aerial and then hit either Z during the IASA frames of said aerial to do a Vidjo-drop or A (direction options) for a Vidjo-cancel.

Vidjo-dropping will allow the user to do things such as down aerialing into a Kamikaze Vidjo-drop bomb-drop or turnip-drop into another aerial; likewise, performing a Vidjo-cancel will allow the user to do things such as neutral-airing into a turnip throw or down aerialing into a turnip throw (the latter is especially useful if the vegetable in question is a grandfather/stitchface turnip). The player can also down air while barely hitting the opponent, perform a Vidjo-drop bomb-drop and immediately airdodge to avoid the ensuing explosion (though this technique is easily countered by airdodging by people who often airdodge after a down air from Peach in the hopes that she mistimes the follow-up or that they can simply shield it if they are on the ground).

The Vidjo-drop and Vidjo-cancel do have their limitations, however. Because of the (nonexistent) amount of stun in Peach's attacks, a Down air into a Vidjo-cancel or even a Vidjo-drop can be shielded as long as the person hit by the down air is not launched off the ground by it—which, unfortunately, requires high percentages. Vidjo-dropping will also allow characters with little stun (all of the floaty characters) to Neutral Air out of stun or just airdodge.



"2 out of 3" rumor[edit]

Shortly after the release of Kid Icarus Uprising, a multitude of screen caps appeared on All is Brawl, showing a conversation on social site Twitter between Sakurai's official account and a Canadian fan.[1] The conversation began with the fan asking for Geno from Super Mario RPG, Isaac from Golden Sun, and Mega Man from his eponymous series to appear. Sakurai's response was "2 out of 3", which the blog author claimed gave credence to the possibility of two of the three aforementioned characters appearing. However, the author also claimed that the Tweet in question from Sakurai was deleted only half an hour after being posted.

The rumor was proven false almost immediately; images showed that in both Sakurai's real Twitter feed (where the Tweet did not appear) and the image showing Sakurai's feed with the "2 out of 3" Tweet both had a Tweet count of 8807. The plausibility of the situation of Sakurai revealing very notable information, then immediately retracting it, was also doubted.

Super Smash Bros. Memories rumor[edit]

According to an anonymous source who wrote to Zelda Informer, Super Smash Bros. 4 for the Nintendo 3DS would be called Super Smash Bros. Memories. The letter outlined that Nintendo has confirmed that both Super Smash Bros. games – for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS - will not be identical, and the source also claimed that it knew the main difference between the two.

According to the rumor, Wii U's Super Smash Bros. would focus on modern characters while Super Smash Bros. Memories would star retro characters, such as Donkey Kong Jr., Ridley, Pac-Man, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Dig Dug, and Stanley the Bug Man. The source also claimed that Nintendo would put the game on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2013, around December.

This rumor ended up proving false, with the E3 2013 reveal stating that the main difference between the two versions of the game would not be between characters, but between stages, and that the 3DS version would be called Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Sakurai also later confirmed that both versions would have the same playable cast. [2]The rumor's set time frame of Q4 2013 was also proven false, as the game was later set for release on October 3rd, 2014.

Smash Direct trophy quizzes[edit]

During the April 8th Smash Direct, there were multiple "trophy quizzes" throughout the presentation, where a part of a trophy was shown, with the viewers being given a few seconds to guess the character the trophy is of, before revealing it. The trophies used in the quizzes were Tiki from Fire Emblem: Awakening, Fi from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Pseudo-Palutena from Kid Icarus: Uprising (who was presented in a way to make it appear to be Palutena's trophy, before revealing it to be Pseudo-Palutena), and King Kihunter from Metroid: Other M. With these trophies being from series that are seen as highly likely to get a new playable character in Smash 4, and with Sakurai seemingly dropping many hints or outright teasing the audience during the direct (such as the aforementioned Pseudo-Palutena fakeout, only briefly showing the contentious Ridley's shadow in an ambiguous manner during the boss presentation, instead of outright confirming his role, and outright stating Zero Suit Samus was cut before showing her off in the game), a widespread theory developed that these "trophy quizzes" were to hint at some of the new characters being added to the playable cast. The characters associated with the trophies were speculated to be a character from Fire Emblem: Awakening (most often speculated to be Chrom), a new character from The Legend of Zelda series (most often speculated to be Ghirahim or Impa from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword), Palutena from the Kid Icarus series, and Ridley from the Metroid series.

While Palutena was later confirmed (as well as Dark Pit), and Lucina and Robin were also included, serving as the Fire Emblem representative, no Zelda or Metroid newcomers were included in the game, although Sheik and Zero Suit Samus were revealed later in the direct. Whether or not Sakurai purposefully hid hints in the trophy quizzes is unknown.



Mechanics[edit]

Tipper[edit]

Forward smashes with the Home-Run Bat have several hitboxes. Normally, the hitboxes closest to the handle of the bat cause less damage and knockback. The most knockback is hence obtained by hitting the target with the tip of the bat. This is normally referred to as a tipper, and while all hitboxes OHKO in normal matches, mastering the tipper is very important in the Home-Run Contest.

After a certain amount of damage, however, the Sandbag flies farther if it's hit with an attack other than a Home-Run Bat's forward smash. In Brawl, after 390% damage, an up-throw is more effective. Surprisingly, the tipper can't reflect projectiles like Ness' forward smash can, despite the Home-Run Bat being based on an instrument used to send oncoming projectiles (baseballs) in the opposite direction.

"No ping" hit[edit]

In Melee, there's a hitbox on the handle of the bat that when landed, lacks the "ping" sound of a typical hit connection. This hitbox produces more vertical based knockback with much lower damage, and has much higher base knockback than the other hitboxes of the Home-Run Bat, while having much lower knockback scaling. As a result, the no ping hit can be utilised to achieve greater distance at low percents. Though when around 100%, the other hitboxes of the Home-Run Bat achieve greater distance.

The no ping hit doesn't work the same for every character though. For a few characters, such as Donkey Kong and Dr. Mario, the no ping hit is much weaker, never being stronger than the other hitboxes of the Home-Run Bat at any percent. For a few other characters, such as Ganondorf and those with nonstandard home run swings, the no ping hitbox doesn't exist.

In Brawl, the no-ping hit still exists, but it is very difficult to connect with for most characters, and has little to no utility due to having only average knockback (which compared to the rest of the attack is pitiful) and dealing about half damage.

Non-standard forward smashes[edit]

In Melee, Captain Falcon and Sheik have unique forward smashes. Their home run swings consist of two strikes, with the second hit sending the opponent on a near pure vertical trajectory. This attack still has the OHKO power of every other character's home run swing, but is virtually useless in the Home-Run Contest, where more horizontal trajectory is desired.


EVO 2013 Donation Drive[edit]

On January 8th, 2013, the Evolution Championship Series announced its lineup of games for EVO 2013 in the upcoming summer season. Although the lineup did not include Melee as Smashers had hoped for in the aftermath of a dominating Facebook straw poll, the EVO staff announced an 8th game donation drive for breast cancer research, wherein the community that donated the most money to charity would earn their game an official spot at EVO 2013. Facing stiff competition from the Skullgirls community, a massive push from Scar and Prog (popularly dubbed the "Spirit Bomb" donation drive) resulted in the Smash community raising over $94,000 and winning Melee the final spot at EVO 2013. The campaign and its results immortalized the Melee It On Me podcast as a highly influential community platform and provided incredible momentum for the Smash community going into the rest of 2013.

Nintendo Stream Crisis[edit]

On July 9th, 2013, the directors of EVO 2013 announced that they had received a cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo of America prohibiting EVO 2013 from streaming Melee on its worldwide broadcast, putting the Melee community into adversity again. Prog led the charge for a decision reversal with a well-organized social media campaign, whose rallying point centered around the MIOM Facebook group. With the aid of frontpage Reddit exposure, vilifying coverage by more than 30 gaming-related news outlets, and a legion of Twitter voices, Nintendo shockingly reversed its decision just hours after the initial announcement, prompting a renewed celebration by the Melee community about its spot at EVO 2013 and a huge sigh of relief for all Smashers following the news.

E3 Smash 4 Invitational[edit]

On June 10th, 2014, Nintendo hosted an invitational tournament during E3 2014 in Los Angeles, California, to commemorate the upcoming release of Super Smash Bros. 4. The host of the event was Geoff Keighley, while Reggie Fils-Aime also made an appearance to present the winner's trophy. Although most were skeptical of Nintendo's ability to select 16 worthy invitees to the event when it was first announced in early May, the eventual roster mostly consisted of prominent community figures, including several members of the Melee It On Me team. Prog and Scar manned the commentary along with D1, announcing live to the packed NOKIA Theatre as well as to a record-breaking livestream audience on the Nintendo Twitch channel. Toph and PewPewU were also selected as participants in the event. Although many disliked the Smash 4 gameplay, the event was well-received for its exhibition quality and increasing diplomacy between Nintendo and the competitive Smash community.

EVO 2014[edit]

Melee It On Me continued to produce a great presence during the summer of Smash in 2014. After being invited by Tony Cannon, the team did a panel on Day 2 of EVO 2014, speaking about The Platinum Age of Melee: "Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of the oldest and most celebrated Nintendo titles still played by fighting game players across the world. The Melee It On Me team provides a retrospective on the meteoric comeback of the Melee community over the past year; from the game’s return at EVO 2013 to the highly-acclaimed Smash Brothers documentary, from Nintendo’s historic recognition of the scene to the newfound teams and sponsors of today." Video footage of the panel was recorded by Arturo Sanchez, but it is undetermined if the panel will be uploaded.

San Diego Comic-Con 2014[edit]

On July 25th, 2014, Nintendo hosted another Super Smash Bros. 4 tournament in its pre-release phase, this time opening sign-ups to the general public at San Diego Comic-Con 2014. Scar and Toph were chosen as the commentators for the special event alongside Nintendo reps Bill Trenen and JC Rodrigo. Team members such as Tafokints also competed in the tournament, which was eventually won by SoCal Smasher DEHF.

Moving Forward[edit]

Melee It On Me has taken huge strides in both outreach and production value. An official website, Twitter, and YouTube channel were launched in June 2013 thanks in large part to the efforts of Juggleguy. The podcast gained a new producer, CosmoNaught, in August 2013 to improve podcast production quality and ease Scar's workload. Toph and Tafokints joined the team in November 2013 to promote the team's outreach in commentary and content creation, respectively. The "SSBMRank" Top 100 gained significant influence within the Melee community thanks to Tafokints in December 2013. SFAT and PewPewU joined the team in January 2014 as sponsored players and a world-class Melee team. MattDotZeb joined the team in October 2014, giving his intercollegiate circuit "The Melee Games" a nationwide platform to work with. Furthermore, Scar and Toph have recently launched a spin-off podcast ("The Scar and Toph Show") on Monday evenings to complement the Thursday podcasts, which remain a biweekly endeavor in 2014. Tafokints has also been instrumental in launching MIOM 2.0, the new team website that centers around blog content and character guides.
