SmashWiki:Project

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

A project is an organized effort to direct attention towards particular substandard areas of the wiki that need improvement. This page features every ongoing wiki project for editors looking for something to help out with.

Current projects[edit]

Project name Relevant links Description Status
Cleanup of the Notable Players sections SmashWiki:Cleanup of the Notable Players sections
  • Any remaining "Notable players" sections on character articles need to be overhauled to comply with our new standards, go to the dedicated project page for full details. Additionally, there are "Most historically significant players" sections that are updated to the proper format, but have substandard blurbs written for the players, which need to be rewritten as well-written summaries that actually explain how the player is historically significant, and not just be a banal list of results and contextless wins.
Ultimate has been completed and some characters just need an update. Every Smash 64 character article has the proper format and been trimmed down, but most of the blurbs are overly basic and need to be elaborated on. Every Project M character article is listed as complete, but many of the character articles still do not have the proper formatting. Most Brawl pages, plus a few Melee and Smash 4 pages, are still not complete.
Adding rankings sections to Smasher pages SmashWiki:Smasher article guidelines#Rankings
  • Every smasher who has ever been ranked on a notable power ranking should have a section listing every notable power ranking they have been on. The section should be split into subsections by game and farther subsections by each type of ranking, while the data should be in table form, formatted as shown in the linked guidelines.
Currently in progress, as this is a recent update
Reformatting tournament results on Smasher pages SmashWiki:Smasher article guidelines#Tournament results
  • On results tables in Smasher articles, use bold text to highlight all majors, and bold + italic text to highlight all supermajors. Refer to our List of majors page to see what tournaments the wiki consider to be majors and supermajors.
  • List the number of entrants in the "placement" column, in accordance to the formatting in the guidelines.
  • If the results table is excessively large, split the results into a linked subpage, and only keep the most important tournaments on the main article. See M2K's Melee results for an example of how this should be done.
  • Add online icon (Online) next to the tournament name if it is an online tournament.
Currently in progress, as this is a recent update.
Add the new "Best ranking" and "Best result" infobox parameters on all Smasher pages, and fill the "Ranking" parameter with the player's most recent ranking Template:Infobox Smasher/doc#Rankings and results information
  • SmashWiki has purged the Skill parameter from Smasher infoboxes, and in its place has added the "Best historical ranking" and "Best tournament result" parameters. Refer to the linked guidelines for what should be included in these parameters.
  • The "Ranking" parameter has been adjusted to list the player's most recent ranking, rather than only listing current rankings.
This is a very recent update, so very little progress has been made yet.
Smash region articles List of superregions + regions needing articles
  • Create articles for all major Smash regions, detailing their competitive history, significant players, and tournaments hosted.
  • Add additional links to region pages from other competitive articles, to improve their integration into the wiki.
Most larger regions in the US + Japan have their own articles, but some smaller regions in the US, plus international regions, still need their own articles. Non-English-speaking regions may require additional attention from residents of those countries.
Cleanup of History sections and Infoboxes on Smasher pages SmashWiki:Smasher article guidelines + Template:Infobox Smasher#Character information + Category:Articles in need of cleanup
  • Rewrite the History section of Smasher articles to be less like a news report of all the player's tournament results.
  • Any Infoboxes bloated with unnecessary amount of characters should be properly vetted.
In progress
Cleanup of tournament articles SW:TRIVIA (1), Talk page discussion (2)
  • Add a "Summary of events" section to important tournaments (majors and supermajors, etc.) that provides details of important events in bracket, and facts regarding the tournament's historical significance.
  • Trim down trivia sections that are excessively long, and move trivia points to other sections of the article if applicable.
  • EVO 2013 is an example of a tournament page that meets these criteria.
In progress
Recategorizing old tournament pages in the National and Regional tournaments categories Category:National tournaments + Category:Regional tournaments
  • The "National" tournament designation has been obsoleted in favor of "Major" and "Supermajor", though most remaining pages in the National category are more befitting of the "Regional" and "Superregional" designations.
  • We now categorize tournaments by game, so tournaments in the "Regional" category need to have the appropriate game-specific categories (e.g. Category:Regional tournaments (SSBM)), and the general "Regional" category should have nothing left in it other than the game-specific categories. Many of the pages are also more fitting in the newly added Superregional categories instead, so be sure to add the game-specific Superregional categories when appropriate.
In progress
Cleanup of bloated trivia sections SmashWiki:Trivia + Category:Articles with excessively long trivia (Note that most violating articles are not in this category at this moment)
  • Many articles, especially character articles, have bloated trivia sections that are full of bad "trivia" that clearly violates our guidelines, while trivia sections are often poorly written too. Bad trivia needs to be removed, while any poorly written but salvageable trivia needs to be rewritten to meet our standards. Some trivia may additionally be legitimate information but is better incorporated into somewhere appropriate in the main article text.
  • If editors come across violating trivia sections but are unable to clean it up at that time, they should tag the sections with {{Trivia}} to alert other editors of the violating section.
In progress
Cleanup of bloated galleries and character categories on images SmashWiki:Images
  • Many articles, particularly character and stage articles, have bloated galleries full of excessive images that do not show anything uniquely noteworthy from other images already on the page. These excessive images that do not have an explicit informative purpose should be removed, galleries should not be treated as a dumping ground for every image on the wiki that features the article's subject.
  • Many images have the categories of every character that happens to appear in the image, when character categories should only be applied to images when the character is the direct focus of the image. Images should have any such misplaced character categories removed.
In progress
Updating files with deprecated licensing SmashWiki:Image copyrights + Category:Public domain files
  • While the licensing templates from the repealed image copyright tags policy have long been obsoleted by those from the newer image copyrights policy, several older files on the wiki continue to use them. These files should be updated to use the newer templates.
  • Several files have outdated or incomplete categorization, or only have the category automatically included by the licensing template. In the latter case, only replacing the template risks putting the file in Special:UncategorizedFiles. Follow the "recommended categories" table here when dealing with such files.
  • Some files are in the protected image list, meaning that they cannot be edited by regular users. These files will require administrator intervention.
All files except for those in Category:Public domain files and protected images have been updated.
List of glitches articles Forum:Glitch pages
  • Create List of glitches articles for all five Super Smash Bros. titles. These articles should contain brief descriptions about all glitches with their own SmashWiki articles, as well as minor glitches that don't have their own pages or are included in other articles.
The List of glitches article for Melee has been created, but more minor glitches can be added to the list. The list articles for the other four main games still need to be created.
Documentation of unplayable characters User:Plague von Karma Characters obtainable through hacking Smash games are to be given fighter-style pages, with the appropriate emphasis on their unplayable nature, and with their playability in mind. Once the pages are done, a relevant link is added to their main pages. For example, Giga Bowser with Giga Bowser (SSBM). Male Wire Frame (SSBM) is generally the gold standard for how a page should look. Smash 64 and Melee are complete, with most Brawl bosses also accounted for. Fighting Polygons, Tabuu, and Ultimate Giga Bowser are not yet done. The Master Hand and Crazy Hand pages need to be revamped towards the new standard. Pages generally could use with extra opinions, possibly decent gameplay videos, and more.
