Mushroom Platforms are objects originating from the Mario universe. They appear in several Mario-themed stages of the Super Smash Bros. series, often as background elements but sometimes as usable platforms.

Origin[edit]

Super Mario Bros. sprite

Mushroom Platforms are giant, spotted, mushroom-like trees that have appeared in the Mario franchise since Super Mario Bros.. In their debut game, they featured yellow caps with red spots, matching the original coloration of the Super Mushroom. Over time, Mushroom Platforms adopted various color schemes, including red with white spots—the standardized appearance of Super Mushrooms since Super Mario World. While basic Mushroom Platforms function identically to regular solid terrain, they are visually distinguished by their wide, stalk-supported tops. Later installments introduced specialized variants, such as the bouncy Mushroom Trampoline and the tilting Seesaw Shroom in New Super Mario Bros. that sways left or right when Mario or another character stands in said position.

Mushroom Platforms also appear in the Mushroom Gorge race course from Mario Kart Wii. On this track, standard Mushroom Platforms are depicted with light green caps and white spots, while the bouncy Mushroom Trampolines are colored red with white spots; both varieties feature large, rounded tops.

In Super Smash Bros.[edit]

There are five Mushroom Platforms in the distant background of the Mushroom Kingdom stage, inspired by the first Super Mario Bros.. The Mushroom Platforms are all roughly the same width, though the center one is slightly wider. The Mushroom Platforms are dark green with light-green spots, not matching the color scheme of the first Super Mario Bros.

None of them are interactable, but most of them have visual elements that add to the overall detail of the stage, based on Super Mario Bros. A Bill Blaster is positioned on the leftmost Mushroom Platform, a Buzzy Beetle is bouncing on a Spring in the second one, and there is a green Koopa Troopa walking back and forth on both the middle and the rightmost Mushroom Platform each, ironically a behavior utilized by Red Koopa Troopas in Super Mario Bros., and not the green variety.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

There is a different Mushroom Kingdom stage that similarly depicts three Mushroom Platforms in the background, all matching their red-spotted yellow design from Super Mario Bros. There is still the discrepancy of Green Koopa Troopas walking on the left- and rightmost Mushroom Platforms without falling off as well as a Goomba doing similar on a slightly smaller and more distant background.

In Super Smash Bros. 4[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Mushroom Platforms are usable platforms on the Golden Plains and Rainbow Road stages, marking their first appearance as interactable stage elements in a Super Smash Bros. game. In Golden Plains, one of the Mushroom Platforms is red with white spots, while the other is blue with white spots. In Rainbow Road, one of the main fighting areas is on a Mushroom Platform consisting of a large white top with spots of varying colors. Since the fighters are on a 2D plane, they cannot move all over the Mushroom Platform, but the Shy Guys in karts sometimes drive across them. The Mushroom Platforms of the Golden Plains stage are semi-solid, allowing fighters to pass through them.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Mushroom Platforms appear across several returning stages, including the Mushroom Kingdom stage from Super Smash Bros. and Golden Plains. In the Mushroom Kingdom stage of Smash 64, they retain their background presence and are recolored yellow with red spots to match their original look in Super Mario Bros.; similarly, the Koopa Troopas walking atop them are now Red Koopa Troopas to reflect their classic behavior.
