Trick Shot (トリックショット, Trick Shot) is Duck Hunt's neutral special move in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Overview

When used, the dog kicks out a can from Hogan's Alley. If the input is pressed again, the gunman will shoot the can again, sending it forward in the direction it was kicked a short distance. If an opponent touches it, or if time passes, the can will explode. This explosion can also hurt Duck Hunt. Players can influence the can's movement when the can isn't being shot by simply attacking it or hitting it with projectiles. Hitting the can from the opposite side that it was initially hit will reverse the direction of the remaining shots. The can can be shot a total of eight times, no matter how fast it is shot, before it starts to flash, and then explodes. The can also starts falling faster and arcs lower with each subsequent shot. The shots aimed at the container can also damage opponents if they are too close. These shots deal 1% damage. The can's explosion will deal anywhere from 9% to 12% damage, and has a flame effect. The amount of times the can has been shot will determine the damage dealt. The attack can K.O. at about 160%.

Customization

Customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. Trick Shot's two variations are:

  1. High Explosive Shot: The can is kicked once upon usage, and cannot be shot multiple times. The can travels a great distance at a quick pace. Pressing the input will make the gunman shoot the can, causing it to explode immediately.
  2. Zigzag Shot: The can will move in alternating directions when shot, and when it explodes any opponent caught in the blast will be sent directly upwards.

Origin

The can is from Hogan's Alley, a classic NES title that used the NES Zapper. The objective of the game is to shoot the cardboard cutouts that resembled villains among the innocent bystanders. Shooting an innocent, or failing to shoot the gangsters, would result in the loss of a life. After five rounds, a bonus round commenced, where tin cans started to drop from one side of the screen. The objective was to shoot the tin cans, which would propel them upwards, and onto the ledges for points.

Trophy information

Can

Empty cans just like this appeared in the NES game Hogan's Alley. In the Trick Shot mode, you got points depending on which area you knocked them into. In Smash Bros., Duck Hunt's default standard special sends a can flying in an arc. It'll explode if it hits an opponent, or you can press the special button again to shoot at it.

Trivia

A close-up of the can, as well as the dog's reaction when the can is shot nearby.
  • If the can is shot while it is near the dog and duck, the duo will duck down and the dog will cover its eyes before assuming their normal stance again. Despite this, shooting the can cannot harm the dog that spawned it, though the potential resulting explosion can.
  • When Duck Hunt grabs an opponent during Trick Shot, the Trick Shot can still be used even when Duck Hunt grabs an enemy. It is the only projectile move to possess that ability.
  • Like with Clay Shooting and all of Duck Hunt's smash attacks, the color of the target circle changes depending on which player uses Duck Hunt.
