As defined by the members of the N64 forum on Smashboards, this is the current (and most likely final) SSB64 character matchup chart until possibly the smash 64 backroom is made. Before looking at the chart below, take note that:

  • This list is constructed under US smash 64. Japanese smash is much different as there is virtually 0 DI and that there are different character balances (Notably, Ness and Link are a lot better in Japanese smash 64 and Jigglypuff is worse).
  • Due to this being the United States smash 64 also, Hyrule is the main stage played. In Japanese smash, Dreamland is the only stage allowed. If Dreamland was the main stage in smash 64, Kirby would most likely been above Fox and the Fox-Pikachu matchup would be considered much worse. Also, Mario's placement would have most likely been above Falcon as it is easier for Mario to gimp.

Color index and matchup examples

  • A blue matchup refers to a matchup better than 60 40 (Hard Counter). An example is Pikachu vs Samus which is a 70-30 or possibly even a 75-25 for Pikachu. This is considered to be the hardest matchup in the game along with Fox vs. Jigglypuff and Fox vs. Samus.
  • A green matchup refers to a 60 40 matchup (Soft Counter). An example is Kirby vs. Falcon where Kirby has a 60-40 matchup ratio. It also was used for Yellow matchups that are on a border between even and counter. An example of this is Pikachu vs Fox is on the border between 60-40 Pikachu and 55-45 Pikachu and Pikachu vs Kirby which is similar to Pikachu vs. Fox.
  • A yellow matchup refers to a 55 to 45, 50 to 50, or 45 55 matchup (even). Examples are Kirby vs. Mario which is exactly 50-50, Falcon vs Mario is an example of a 45-55 matchup.
  • An orange matchup refers to a 40 60 matchup (Soft Countered). An example is Falcon vs Kirby is on the border between soft countered and hard countered (where Falcon is soft countered)
  • A red matchup refers to a matchup worse than 40 60 (Hard Countered). Samus vs. all of the top tiers is an example.

Other information

  • It can be noted that there are barely any matchups that are worse than 40-60 unlike the other smash games and only Fox and Pikachu have them. The possible exceptions in other tiers are Luigi vs Jigglypuff and DK vs Jigglypuff which are possibly 65-35 matchups (for DK and Luigi respectively due to both of them having a kill combo at extremely low percents). These kill combos respectively are:

At 0 percent and if DK has a fully charged punch, DK can grab, grab release, regrab, cargo throw into a Giant Punch which combos and kills at 0 percent. DK also has very easy kills at higher percents and it is difficult for Jigglypuff to space vs. DK's up b and b-air. Luigi's can up air to up b to kill at 25 percent. Jigglypuff also has issues comboing floaties which makes the matchup even harder.

  • Due to these reasons, Jigglypuff is considered by many to be nonviable in low tier tournaments. Jigglypuff for the same reasons is considered to be a Glass Cannon as Jigglypuff either has really good or really poor matchups. On the other hand, DK is considered by many to be the best character in low tiers as DK has no problems vs floaties and has no poor matchups in low tiers.
  • Pikachu has 0 even matchups (similar to Metaknight) with the possible exception being Fox vs Pikachu on Hyrule which is barely in Pikachu's favor. The reason why it is listed as a green matchup is since Fox has to have almost perfect spacing in order to avoid gimps.
  • In a similar regard, Fox is considered to be a bigger threat on Hyrule vs other characters and Pikachu is considered to be by far the best character on Dreamland. The main reason why Fox is lower than Pikachu regardless of this (on the tier list) is since Pikachu wins vs Fox in that matchup.
  • It can be noted that Samus has no even matchups with the exception being Samus vs Jigglypuff.
