To commemorate the release of Super Smash Bros. 4, and the Super Smash Bros. series as a whole, Nintendo has announced an invitational tournament being hosted during E3 2014, at the NOKIA Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

  • The game played will be Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • 16 "highly skilled" players will be invited to participate.
  • The tournament will have 3,000 in-person spectators with costumed fans receiving priority seating,[1] and there will be a live stream of it with commentators.
  • A video contest is currently in progress, the winner of which will be awarded a VIP trip to the event and have the opportunity to play one of the tournament winners.
  • The host of the event will be Geoff Keighley.[2]

Playable characters

Most characters that were revealed at the time of the tournament's original announcement at the end of April will be playable, including all six confirmed newcomers, though several confirmed veterans are omitted to reduce the available roster to 16, the number of players.

Rules

The following rules will be in effect:[5]

  • Before the tournament begins, the players will choose characters in random order. Characters may not be chosen by multiple players, and players cannot switch characters at any time.
  • Each match will have 4 players. Matches will have 4 stock with a 5-minute timer. The top 2 players in terms of score advance; if there is a tie between 2 and 3, the number of KOs is the tiebreaker, and a further tie is broken by fan vote.
  • The final match will take place on Battlefield, and have a timer of 8 minutes.
  • Items will be on medium for round 1, low for rounds 2 and 3, and off for the final.
  • Stages are to be revealed at the tournament.
  • Final Smashes may also be revealed throughout the tournament.
