display title thing[edit]

why would we even need that Red (talk) Red 08:43, 24 May 2014 (EDT)

 • 'Cuz it's consistent with how we format things in the articles? Besides, I was bored and it was early morning. Perfect time for some repetitive custodial work. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 10:38, 24 May 2014 (EDT)

Symbols[edit]

I remeber you asked me a while ago if I have the symbol .svgs somewhere. Well I do now, but Dropbox basically doesn't allow you to link to folders. Do you know of a better way to link you to the files than posting a list of 50 items somewhere? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Aurum 18:08, 29 May 2014 (EDT)

Er... Too late. I just reconstructed them. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 18:20, 29 May 2014 (EDT)
Actually, tell ya the truth, can't you just host them on the SmashWiki even if we can't use them on pages for the time being? I'd like to eventually move over to SVGs as it is anyway. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 21:19, 15 June 2014 (EDT)
Well I dunno. I haven't tried uploading SVGs here in a long time, because the last time I attempted to do so, the wiki's renderer butchered them (and I don't just mean small errors at smaller sizes, I mean things like "giant line through the image"). It's reasonable to say something might have changed since then, but with no real reason to change to SVGs I haven't really considered checking. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Brass 22:11, 15 June 2014 (EDT)
Actually, y'know what? Google Drive lets you share folders. Like so. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 22:58, 27 June 2014 (EDT)

Those "shortcut" templates[edit]

What's the point of them? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Trumpeteer 16:23, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

Figured I'd put them in to match how we still have the For3DS and ForWiiU templates, as a quick shorthand. You said you didn't have a problem with those two for the time being, although that was several months ago. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 16:24, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
My issue with these ones is how Brawl and Brawl are very similar in code, and identical in function, but look totally different on the page. It's ripe for confusion. Could we figure out a way to improve that? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Steppin' 16:27, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
full for the full title, and retroactively added to the For3DS and ForWiiU ones? Although on a related note, I'm sort of stuck on what the shortcut should be for the first Smash. Smash64, Smash... SSB64 would be pretty close to the existing SSB template which has a completely different function, though that makes me wonder if we should somehow merge these shortcut templates into the existing SSB, SSBM, SSBB, etc. templates without screwing with their current functionality. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 16:32, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
Maybe instead a Brawl, or SSBB? (It would replace the existing "for3ds"/"forwiiu".) I think we should keep to not having a template for naturally short redirects like Brawl. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Aurum 16:39, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
How about the name Smash for that template, then? That way it sort of works like how you'd naturally say it, like 64, Brawl, 4, and U. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 18:24, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
Well, more like it works for how some weirdos naturally say it because they think it's acceptable when it really isn't. :P Toomai Glittershine ??? The Spark 22:21, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
I didn't say exactly, it's just you can't have a template named nothing and... oh, just go speedy-delete those other ones. I got the Smash template up, barring any last objections. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 22:37, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

These templates are very unintuitive, don't read clearly and aren't obvious at all. What's the point, exactly? Miles (talk) 23:03, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

Er, I already explained what the point was just above. Thanks for the speedy-delete on those three, though; we decided to consolidate to the Smash template. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 23:05, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
The 3DS and Wii U ones are useful due to having a useful, very brief shorthand. The templates you were adding are less intuitive, take more code than the 3DS/Wii U ones and would require a lot of back-work to implement. Essentially, it's just adding work where there doesn't need to be any. Miles (talk) 23:08, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
Yeah, and now we have a template that serves a purpose for all five games. Besides, don't we have a parser that can globally batch-replace text? VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 23:11, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
It's not better. It is a clear downgrade and it costs effort to implement an inherently less clear system. It's not going to change unless you can make one hell of an argument for it. It's also outrageously brazen to tag for speedy deletion templates that are on hundreds of pages. Miles (talk) 23:14, 24 October 2014 (EDT)
Toomai seemed fine with it, so I thought it'd be a simple batch-replace for the existing ones after creating the new template. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 23:16, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

We had this, it was Template:G, it was deleted. Why? Because the point of these shortcut templates is to shorten code that is really space-taking. Brawl and Melee don't take up too much space, and Smash won't fix much; there are 6 pages that this can link to. Combine this with the fact there are only supposed to be two or three links to a single place on one page (even one, on smaller articles), and you have a really, really limited template. The template differs from others because of its limitations; take a template like this and there are 59 places to link to; this one in particular works on any page with sections. The reason we have for3ds and its counterpart is because, as mentioned before, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS takes up too much space, and is a very big pain in the ass to type out, even without the link.

And another thing: Toomai never said he was fine with it (at least not that I can see on this page). Qwerty (talk) 23:55, 24 October 2014 (EDT)

Well, I assumed he was fine with it because he'd obviously been keeping an eye on the change feed to bring it up in the first place, and he deleted the 'Smashbros' template I decided against and marked for speedy-delete yet left the 'Smash' template alone. Also, from what he was saying above, he didn't sound like he had much of a problem with it either (unless I missed something by taking the 'weirdo' remark as just a minor jab.) VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 04:19, 1 November 2014 (EDT)
I think I marked the Smash template for deletion (not speedy, we're coming to a conclusion here) before he could. As for the second part, he stated a bit further up how the Smash template isn't effective at becoming a shorthand for naturally short links like Brawl. When moving pages[edit]

You don't do a copy-paste move; you have to move them with the "move" button. Doing a copy-paste move splits up the page histories, which isn't a good thing, nor allowed. Rtzxy Image for my signature (and before you say it's too large, I'm going to resize it as [[|20px]]. Reflect! 15:06, 14 November 2014 (EST)

Yes, but the destination pages already exist, so we can't move them normally. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:07, 14 November 2014 (EST)
Still, that's not how you move pages, as it splits up the page histories. Also, if you look at the page histories, someone already tried moving it the way you did, only for it to be reverted by Toomai. Rtzxy Image for my signature (and before you say it's too large, I'm going to resize it as [[|20px]]. Reflect! 15:12, 14 November 2014 (EST)
I think that was from the last time it was brought up and got shot down. Now consensus is for the move, and there's kinda no other option here. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:13, 14 November 2014 (EST)
The edit summary for Toomai's revert was "That's not how you move a page", so that point would be invalid. Rtzxy Image for my signature (and before you say it's too large, I'm going to resize it as [[|20px]]. Reflect! 15:16, 14 November 2014 (EST)

Never ever ever move a page by copy-paste. Ever. Miles (talk) 15:16, 14 November 2014 (EST)

Well how else do we do it? The page already exists from when you kept as a redirect last time. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:17, 14 November 2014 (EST)
You wait for an admin to take action. It's not that difficult. Miles (talk) 15:17, 14 November 2014 (EST)
Well... can you take action, then? VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:18, 14 November 2014 (EST)
As I said previously, I'm considering it. But this isn't a one-time thing. Moving pages by copy-paste is quite simply off-limits. It ruins page histories. Miles (talk) 15:20, 14 November 2014 (EST)
Fine, fair enough about the move method. Still, it's 7:2 in favor of moving. I think we have consensus. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:21, 14 November 2014 (EST)

Stage Table[edit]

I undid the edit because the table you made is good for the Super Smash Bros 4 page. However, since it has stages in both versions, it's not necessary to mention stages for both versions on an article that talks about a particular version of Super Smash Bros 4. ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is bad for me 02:28, 20 November 2014 (EST)

Yeah, I know. I'm aware of that, but I'm trying to make the table dynamic so that it can hide the stages from a particular version. Give me a minute to get the syntax sorted; right now the argument that hides the versions isn't working for some reason. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 02:29, 20 November 2014 (EST)
And... fixed! Bam, check that number! Same template, three different configurations! This should be a major work-saver in the long run! VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 02:31, 20 November 2014 (EST)
Okay, now like say for the Wii U page, can you group stages like Battlefield and Final Destination with the rest of the stages? It looks awkward when the title "Shared Stages" appear when it should only be one version. ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is a never lover boy 02:35, 20 November 2014 (EST)
That... might not be possible. I don't think denoting what stages are shared isn't necessarily out of place even on the individual game pages, though. I think it looks better this way, personally. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 02:38, 20 November 2014 (EST)

When mass-editing[edit]

Mark the edits as minor. It's a pain to see edits go in and out of the RC in 5 minutes. Qwerty (talk) 23:43, 24 November 2014 (EST)

Oops, sorry. Yeah, I forgot to click the box a couple times, like "oop, wait... frig." No big deal, just a lapse in attention. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 23:44, 24 November 2014 (EST)
I suggest you go into your preferences and click "Mark my edits as minor" when doing this sorta thing. Laikue (talk | contribs) 01:25, 25 November 2014 (EST)
Yeah, I'm aware of that option. I don't actually think to use it and when I do, I tend to worry that I won't think to turn it back off and just leave it. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 06:31, 25 November 2014 (EST)

Umm.. Vin[edit]

did you made this symbol? just curious because the file has the name "Vin" in it.

I know this isn't my talk page, nor do I have much reason to butt in. But yes, Vin uploaded that. You can see this info easily by looking at the file's history. Not to mention Vin uses it in their signiture. Laikue (talk | contribs) 03:13, 7 January 2015 (EST)
I said did she made this, and don't jump in if you have no reason to butt in. (Smashworker101 (talk) 22:09, 7 January 2015 (EST))
Number one: HE. Two: yeah, it's my personal mark. You'll see different-themed versions of it on other wikis I'm on, and in a bunch of my other works floating around online. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 06:05, 9 January 2015 (EST)
