The Bowser Impostor, refered to in some materials as Bowser's Brother, is a one time villain in the Mario series and alternate costume character in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Origin[edit]
The Bowser Impostor appears as a boss in two levels of Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, World 8-4 and World 9-4 - in the prior level, he gatekeeps Mario from the fight with the real Bowser. Unlike the similiarly named fake Bowsers featured in both Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels, the Bowser Impostor does not transform into an enemy when defeated, though he himself has his own fake in World D-4. Worlds 8-4 and D-4 were recycled in All Night Nippon: Super Mario Bros., consequentially bringing the Bowser Impostor and his meta-impostor into the game. In Super Mario All-Stars, the Bowser Impostor is identical to his originator instead of having a blue shade.
The character's appearance is simply a blue rendition of Bowser, though the Super Mario All Encyclopedia shows him to have what appears to be a third eye.
While the Bowser Impostor's appearances are sparce, the few he has had - particularly in supplementary materials - have created somewhat of an ambiguity about his identity, not unlike that of the Koopalings, with different licensed books from different territories flipping back and forth between him being an impostor of Bowser, Bowser's brother, or just another fake Bowser. Currently, Nintendo's official stance in all regions is that he is simply an impostor, with the last mention of him being Bowser's brother being the Prima strategy guide for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. Super Smash Bros. uses the "impostor" identity for the character.
In Super Smash Bros. 4[edit]
As a playable character[edit]
The Bowser Impostor appears as an alternate costume, specifically refered to as being such and not just a colour scheme inspired by him in the tips menu, replacing the blue alternate costume based on Bowser's artwork in EU and Japan promotional materials for the first Super Mario Bros. featured in previous Smash games. He is referred to by the announcer and game text as simply "Bowser".
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
As a playable character[edit]
The Bowser Impostor returns as an alternate costume, alongside the exact tip that identified him verbatum.
