The SL button refers to the left shoulder button on both individual Joy-Con when they are detached from the Nintendo Switch. Like the SR button, it matches the color of the Joy-Con. The wrist strap that comes with the Joy-Con can be attached to make the button easier to press.

Overview[edit]

When using dual Joy-Con, it serves no purpose and is completely inaccessible when the Switch is in Handheld mode. When using a single Joy-Con, it serves as a substitute for the L button, acting as a shoulder trigger. In Ultimate, it is used for grabbing opponents, much like how the L button is used for grabbing in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

In Ultimate, the SL button can be customized in the controls menu to perform other functions. Nintendo Switch system version 10.0.0 introduced the ability to map the functionality of any button to any other button from the console options menu, further diversifying how the SL button can be used in Ultimate.
