GL button
The GL button is a trigger button on the back of the left-hand side of the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and on the charging grip for the Joy-Con 2. The GL button matches the color of the controller.
Overview[edit]
The GL button is unique in that it intentionally does not serve a dedicated function. Instead, the button is intended to have any other button functionality mapped to it via the console settings menu. This means that any action tied to a button in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can also be tied to the GL button, further expanding the customization of the in-game controls.
Use of the GL button is fairly niche in competitive Ultimate, as the game was not designed with use of the GL button in mind and the button itself is locked to only being usable with the Nintendo Switch 2. That being said, its inherent versatility is another reason why many competitors prefer playing Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch 2, though this sometimes creates an issue where players who have grown accustomed to playing on the Nintendo Switch 2 will struggle to return to a standard Nintendo Switch at an event that only uses that system.
