The wall jump is a technique some characters may use in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl in which the one momentarily clings to the wall, turns away, and then jumps back. It is performed by touching a wall and then pressing the control stick in the direction opposite the wall. In Brawl, it can also performed by pressing jump when touching a wall. A wall jumping character experiences a short period of invincibility at the moment he or she kicks off the wall. One cannot wall jump forever, as the height one gains from each successive wall jump decreases until they actually lose height.

Additionally, all characters can perform a wall jump directly after wall teching. This technique is often used by players recovering against an edge-guarder.

Melee Characters

In Melee, the following characters can wall jump:

Brawl Characters

In Brawl, the following characters can wall jump. They are listed in order of wall jump height:

Origin

The Wall jump is a common ability in platforming games. Several of the characters who have wall jumps here have had them in games of their own.
Mario, Samus and Sonic have performed wall jumps in their own series; Mario in Super Mario 64, Samus in Super Metroid and Sonic in Sonic The Fighters. There is some speculation as to whether or not Super Mario Bros. is the first instance of walljumping in Nintendo games, although in that game the technique was a glitch. Luigi also had the ability to wall jump in New Super Mario Bros, but not in Super Mario 64 DS. Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Kirby (with the ninja ability in Kirby Superstar) are the only characters that could Wall Jump in a game they appeared in but can't in Brawl.
