Smash Masters League, or SML, is an ongoing Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U circuit of tournaments held throughout 2018 worldwide in counties like the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Germany, China, and more. It is a partnership between ESA Smash and eSports Arena in an effort to make the first Super Smash Bros. global circuit. It was announced on February 11th, 2018[1], and is the spiritual successor to the 2GGC series of tournaments.

Format

Smash Masters League will host tournaments for both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U around the world. It will host tournaments around the world in countries like the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Germany, China, and more. Players will compete for points to qualify for the finale, Smash Worlds, where the top 32 players in each game will play for a $50,000 prize pool for each game. (Smash 4 is subject to change to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch.) ESA Smash-partnered local events will also earn points towards the leaderboard.

Four categories of tournaments will be in Smash Masters League: Esports Arena events, national tournaments, regional tournaments, and local tournaments. Playing at Esports Arena events, national tournaments, and regional tournaments will have opportunities to earn leaderboard points. (Esports Arena events offer the most points.) Local communities will make Top 8 rankings, though they will not count for points. Instead, a double-elimination final between the top 8 players near the end of the year will qualify for regional tournament-level points. At the end of the year, the top 32 players with the most points in each game will compete at Smash Worlds to be crowned champion of the world.
