A Crate is an item that has appeared in the entire Super Smash Bros. series.
Overview
Crates are containers which can hold various different items. When you pick up a Crate, because they are so heavy, you will not be able to jump, attack, and you will move very slowly while holding it. After you have picked up a Crate, you can throw it up, forward, or down. Interestingly, Donkey Kong can move much faster than the rest of the characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee when he his holding a Crate.
Also in Melee, crates may contain an enemy, such as a ReDead or an Octorok. When they are thrown at opponents, they can deal 18 to 22% damage and good knockback.
Crates are very similar to Barrels.
Exploding Crates
Exploding Crates are crates that explode when destroyed and do not contain items. These crates appear in all three games. One out of eight crates are exploding crates. Exploding crates deal around 49% damage strong knockback.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Crates, along with barrels, will have a different appearance depending on what stage you are playing on. For example, on a space stage, futuristic appearance, and on Yoshi's Island, they look like wrapped up presents.[1] Players can also stand on top of Rolling Crates in Brawl.
