*DK can pick up a crate and move with it, as well as throw it downwards (more damage), left, right, or up. He is the only character with this ability.

Crates return in SSBB and have different appearances, depending on the stage they appear on. For example, a crate on the Yoshi's Island stage will look like a gift box. Also introduced are crates with wheels on them, called "Sliding Boxes", which will slide down slopes and probably move when hit. Also new to Brawl is the ability to stand on top of Crates and Barrels. In addition, exploding crates are clearly marked as being explosive.
Also in Melee, crates may contain an enemy, such as a ReDead or an Octorok. When they are thrown at opponents, they can deal 18 to 22% damage and good knockback.

It will also appear as a trophy in Brawl.
Crates are very similar to Barrels.

Overview

Crates are containers which can hold various different items. When you pick up a Crate, because they are so heavy, you will not be able to jump, attack, and you will move very slowly while holding it. After you have picked up a Crate, you can throw it up, forward, or down. Interestingly, Donkey Kong can move much faster than the rest of the characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee when he his holding a Crate.

Also in Melee, crates may contain an enemy, such as a ReDead or an Octorok. When they are thrown at opponents, they can deal 18 to 22% damage and good knockback.

Crates are very similar to Barrels.

Exploding Crates are crates that explode when destroyed and do not contain items. These crates appear in all three games but they are only clearly marked in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You can tell it will explode because it is colored red, with a sticker with a picture of a black flame and reads it "Danger". Exploding crates deal around 49% damage strong knockback.
