In the Super Smash Bros. series, each character can change his/her outfit's color. This is primarily to avoid confusion if there are multiple people playing as the same character.

All playable characters have at least three alternate colors: red, green, and blue. These fit the colors available in Team Battles. Characters can also have alternate colors, such as black or white.

  • One of Captain Falcon's alternate costumes is that of his clone and rival, Blood Falcon.
  • Link's red and blue alternate costumes are his Goron Tunic and Zora Tunic from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

SSBM

  • All of Kirby's and Yoshi's alternate costumes are shown in their respective games.
  • Link's red and blue alternate costumes are his Goron Tunic and Zora Tunic from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

SSBB

  • One of Mario's costumes changes his hat and shirt to white, while changing his overalls to red, causing him to look like Fire Mario.
  • Link's black costume has been altered from a black tunic into Dark Link.
  • One of Meta Knight's costumes will be Dark Meta Knight.
  • One of Peach's costumes makes her look like Daisy.
  • Donkey Kong has an alternate costume that is entirely white, resembling a yeti (or perhaps the character Eddie the Mean Old Yeti from the Donkey Kong Country TV series).
  • Fox appears to have an alternate costume that looks like his grey-furred rival, Wolf O'Donnell.
  • Bowser has an alternate costume in which he has a shining gold shell and bracelets.
