The Reaper Invitational was an invitational held in New York, New York on January 19th, 2025.
Format[edit]
Unique to the invitational is its format, the Reaper Tournament System, which is a new format created by members of the Japanese Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. This event will be the first competitive event to ever implement this format.
The format is split into two different acts. Act 1, also known as Dawn, is a reverse-single elimination bracket where the loser of each set advances. This continues until there are two players left, and the winner of that set becomes the "reaper" while the loser is eliminated. This then leads into Act 2, also known as Judgement. In this act, players are given titles depending on their performance: players that have defeated a player that remains in bracket are deemed "safe", while players that have not defeated a player that remains in bracket are deemed "at risk". The at risk players then play; if there are multiple at risk players, the match order would depend on their seeding, and if there are no at risk players, then the players the reaper had previously defeated will play instead. The loser of those matches then faces off against the reaper, and the loser of that set will be eliminated while the winner will become or remain the reaper. The cycle in Act 2 then continues until only one player remains.
