AlphaZealot is a Smasher and tournament organizer from Ohio. He was an active tournament organizer from 2004 to the early-2010s, organizing over 60 notable events for both Melee and Brawl. He was initially known for being one of the tournament organizers behind Best of Maryland's Best for Melee, as part of the crew Power Underwhelming. He became a tournament organizer on AllisBrawl in 2009 and designed and operated the website's online ladders and ladder playoffs using a beta online version of the tournament software Tio; these online matches became one of the earliest online ladder platforms in esports. In addition, he became the organizer for Brawl on the MLG Pro Circuit in 2010, and continued to organize other video game tournaments with MLG after Brawl was dropped, including Halo Reach, King of Fighters XII, Soul Calibur V, and Mortal Kombat 9, until his final event at the 2012 MLG Summer Championships in Raleigh. The same year, he began working with The Pokémon Company International on their video game championships and monthly online tournaments, eventually becoming the organization's Director of Global Esports and Events. Though he has not been involved with organizing Smash events since the early-2010s, he is still held in high regard in the community, being inducted into the inaugural SmashBoards Hall of Fame for his work as a tournament organizer in 2012 and being ranked 5th on Allston Melee's Top 10 Melee Tournament Organizers in 2020.
Outside of competitive play, AlphaZealot purchased SmashBoards and its related assets from Major League Gaming on November 27th, 2012, through his company Xyelot LLC. He owned SmashBoards until June 1st, 2023, when Xyelot LLC sold SmashBoards to Equistellar Media, Inc, a company owned by Warchamp7. In addition, he was an executive producer and managing partner for the Melee documentary Metagame.
History[edit]
Competitive Smash[edit]
AlphaZealot's competitive debut was at Bomb 1 in Potomac, Maryland. He had begun his competitive career months earlier when close friend and Smash mentor The Muffin King began teaching him the game. Much of his early competitive history is marred by early tournament exits, usually foregoing doubles and occasionally leaving singles in the middle of a tournament.
MLG Feature Writer[edit]
AlphaZealot began his writing career with Major League Gaming in 2005. Since then he has released dozens of articles covering the competitive community through interviews, post event wrap ups, and informative pieces.
One Handed Smash[edit]
In 2005, AlphaZealot learned to play Smash one handed while training with ChuDat. After weeks of practice he eventually created the only existing guide to one handed Smash. He plays money matches with ChuDat a few times a year, with each match being a battle for 'best in the world' status at one handed Smash. Each match is Peach (AlphaZealot) versus Marth (Chudat) in a best of 3 on Final Destination.
- Bomb 4: AlphaZealot lost 1-2
- MLG Chicago: AlphaZealot won 2-1
- CCX (September): AlphaZealot lost 2-0
- C3 (February): AlphaZealot lost 2-1
