Pound V was a Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl national tournament hosted in Arlington, Virginia, United States from February 19th-21st, 2011, hosted by Plank and TheTantalus. This tournament drew significant controversy after the tournament director, Plank, announced that he would be unable to pay out most of the top finishers due to financial issues he came across when hosting the tournament. The only players who were paid at the time were Laijin and Cheese, who won the Amateur Singles brackets for Melee and Brawl, respectively, and had gotten the cash directly from Plank after the tournament. Nearly ten thousand dollars of prize money was lost, and the incident heavily stained the reputation of Plank, leading to Plank having been the only TO to have ever been placed on Smashboard's tournament organizer blacklist, as well as a hiatus of the Pound tournament series for nearly three years until Pound V.5 (which then was on a much smaller scale than the previous prestigious Pound tournaments). Five years later on November 18th, 2015, Plank announced that he would finally be paying back prize money owed by the tournament.

Rulesets

Melee

• Starter stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Dream Land, Fountain of Dreams
• Counterpick stages: Kongo Jungle, Brinstar, Rainbow Cruise, Pokémon Stadium
• For doubles, Fountain of Dreams was banned and Pokémon Stadium became a starter stage.
• After each player's first loss of the set, they could ban one stage for the rest of the set.
• The modified version of Dave's Stupid Rule was used.

Brawl

• Starter stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Pokémon Stadium, Castle Siege, Lylat Cruise, Smashville, Yoshi's Island
• Counterpick stages: Delfino Plaza, Brinstar, Halberd, Frigate Orpheon, Pictochat, Pokémon Stadium 2, Rainbow Cruise
• Stage striking was done in 1-1-2-2-2-1 order.
• Prior to stage striking, both players could ban one stage for the whole set.
• The standard version of Dave's Stupid Rule was used.
• The sacrificial KO rule was not used, with the results screen always determining the winner.
• "Triple overtime" rule: If a match ties (stocks and percent), there is a 1-stock 3-minute rematch. If this second match also ties, there is another 1-stock 3-minute rematch. If this third match also ties, whoever dealt more damage overall wins.
• Scrooging was banned (defined narrowly as gliding under the stage twice in a row without approaching the opponent in between).
• Ledge grab limit of 50 for singles and 110 for doubles. If a game times out and one side has 51+/111+ ledge grabs while the other side does not, the first side loses.
